Question about 2002 Yamaha YZF-R1

Battery doesnt recharge

My 2002 R1 runs and starts fine but the battery doesnt recharge all the way when I check the voltave its under 13 volts

If you have already replaced the battery, then the charging system would be the suspect. This is a complex system, so either get the manual, take it to a shop, or get the new battery.

Just a guess.

My bike almost starts to run but it seems like fouling spark plugs.


Hi, Barry and the usual suspects are:
1. Spark plugs in bad condition or have an improper gap or are partially fouled.
2. Spark plug cables in bad condition.
3. Battery nearly discharged, should have 12.5 volts.
4. Discharged battery, check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
5. Throttle controls not adjusted correctly.
6. Water or dirt in the fuel system.
7. Water or dirt in the carburetor.*
8. Intake air leak.
9. Fuel tank vent hose and vapor valve plugged, or fuel line closed off, restricting fuel flow.*
10. Enricher valve inoperative.*
11. Engine lubricant to heavy (winter operation).
12. Ignition is not functioning properly (possible sensor failure).
13. Faulty ignition coil.
14. Valves sticking.

Battery voltage drop


Sounds like the starter motor itself. Does the engine turn at all when you try to crank it?

I got Yamaha yfz r1 2002 when I push the starting button the starter runs but there is no ignition, what to do plz


Hi, Flouss_haz_k and the usual suspects are:
1. Fuel tank empty.
2. Fuel supply valve/petcock turned off.
3. Fouled spark plugs.
4. Engine flooded as a result of overuse of the enricher.
5. Vacuum hose to the fuel supply valve/petcock disconnected, broken, cracked, or pinched.
6. Fuel valve/petcock or filter clogged.
7. Fuel line to carburetor or throttle body pinched or kinked.
8. Carburetor float stuck.
9. Fuel injectors clogged.
10. Severely discharged or damaged battery, you need 12.5 volts or better and be able to pass a load test if necessary.
11. Check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
12. Loose or corroded wire connection at the coil, battery or plug between ignition sensor and CDI box.
Spark plug cables in bad condition and shorting check for leakage in the dark, cable connections loose, or connected to the wrong cylinders.
13. Ignition timing incorrect due to a faulty MAP, CKP, O2, TPS, sensors.
14. Faulty neutral, clutch lever, or kickstand safety switch.
15. Faulty fuel pump or fuse or relay.
16. Faulty CDI box.
17. Tip over sensor needs a reset.
18. Check for engine trouble codes.

I have 02 yamaha r1 it wont start it just click under the seat it wont push crank


Hi, Anonymous it should be noted that in order to "PROPERLY" diagnosis any electric starter issue it is "IMPERATIVE" that you begin with a fully charged battery 12.5 volts or better and be able to pass a proper load test, and the usual suspects are:
1. Battery terminals have loose or corroded connections.
2. Battery cables faulty due corroded or broken internal wiring at the cable connector especially the "NEGATIVE" cable which needs to be checked at "BOTH" ends.
3. Battery voltage, 12.5 volts or better,to the main circuit breaker to the ignition switch to the security/ignition fuse to the TSM/TSSM module to the engine stop/run switch to the starter button to the starter relay to the green wire that connects to the starter solenoid has dropped more than 1/2 volt.
4. With a voltmeter connected to the battery, the ignition switch in the on position, the kill switch in the run position, the starter button depressed, starter engagement should not bring voltage below 8-9 volts.
If a lower voltage is produced a proper battery load test should be performed with a load tester to validate battery integrity or battery replacement.
5. Faulty starter relay, check continuity.
6. Faulty starter solenoid, check contact plate and shoes for excessive electrical erosion/etching, refurbish as necessary or invert contact plate and use the virgin backside. Check contact shoes for being loose. Replace solenoid if the negative function is still a final outcome.
7. Faulty starter, bench test starter with a 12-volt battery if negative function check, decontaminate and undercut armature commutator segments as necessary, check segments with an ohmmeter probe each one and the segment next to it for shorts. Have the armature tested with a growler and field coils, and brush plate with an ohm-meter for opens, shorts or grounds. Replace brushes if less than .438" It is generally cheaper to overhaul/refurbish a starter motor than buy a new one.

I have a 2003 R1, I am having major problems with the engine, when I start the bike everything runs fine for about 15-20 min. Once the engine warms up it starts to lose lots of power and start putting out...

1. Severely discharged or a damaged battery, should have 12.5 volts or better and be able to pass a load test if necessary.
2. Check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
3. Spark plugs in bad condition or partially fouled.
4. Spark plug cables in bad condition and leaking check for spark leakage in the dark.
5. Spark plug gap too close or too wide.
6. Faulty ignition coil, module, and or sensor.
7. Loose, dirty, or corroded ignition module connector at crankcase.
8. Faulty CKP sensor.
9. Intake air leak.
10. Water, dirt, or rust in the fuel system, carburetor and/or filter.
11. Fuel tank vent system plugged or carburetor vent line closed off.
12. Vacuum line from intake manifold to fuel valve is broken, cracked, pinched, or missing.
13. Carburetor controls misadjusted.
14. Damaged carburetor.
15. Incorrect valve timing.
16. Weak or broken valve springs.
17. Damaged intake or exhaust valve.
18. Check for engine trouble codes

I have 2002 saturn L will not hold charge . Had battery checked it was fine . Replaced alternater and still not fixed. Will start when jumped off n run til battery is drained then everything goes out...


OK Check the voltage coming out of the alternator while it's running you should have at least 13-14.7 volts and no less than 13 volts and no more than 15 volts.Also check your alternator belt for slipage.

you sound like you have a dead cell in your battery, if so it needs replacement. A dead cell in the battery can happen from various things, and wont hold a full charge if you put it on a tester it will give you 9-10 volts instead of 12.5 -13 volts, the coil wires run directly from the battery so it has access to full power (makes sense right?) and if your battery isn't holding under full load then that could be the fix for you

I am trying to tell if my alternator or battery is shot she starts up with a jumper cable and a light on the dash shows and exclamination point with a circle around it its a 2002 audi a4 quarto


once you get it started,while its running,simply disconnect the positive battery wire. if the car stays running then your altenator is fine,and its the battery thats bad. if it dies immediately,then the altenator is shot and battery is fine.

Starter relay just clicks on my r1 2002

We just replaced the battery and it worked fine


Use a meter to confirm whether the battery is still working. The meter should read around 12-13 VDC if the battery is good. The 12 Volt Peg Perego battery is made with 2 6 volt batteries connected in series. Maybe the connection broke when the battery fell out. Check the connection and also check with a meter if either battery is pumping out 6 volts.
