There are a number of things that can cause this, depending on the engine fitted. Assuming a Briggs & Stratton V-twin...

Check that the carb solenoid under the float bowl is connected, has battery voltage when the ignition switch is at 'RUN', and is functional.

As a quick check, with the engne OFF, turn key to 'RUN' there should be an audiable 'click' from the carb if the solenoid is working.

After that, check that the fuel pump is delivering fuel (disconnect output, and crank engine). SHould be a good flow.

Hi, I have a 13.5hp Briggs & Stratton motor which starts and will only run on choke slow rpms and mild smoke.

check the point where the fuel hose goes to the fuel tank
there is very fine filter in the hose that could be blocked preventing full fuel flow
only running on choke indicates insufficient fuel flow

Started running rough and stalled. runs better if choke is pulled out but still stalls if load. was going to replace plugs, fuel filter and air filter to see if it helps. any suggestions?

Could be what Ray says, or could be very dirty fuel filter, partially blocked gas line, defective fuel pump or slow leak in gas line (although you'd almost certainly notice that from the smell or just plain see it). My old DR Field and Brush Mower was doing exactly the same thing, and it turned out to need the carburetor replaced.

Lx288 mower quit running I thought it was out of gas so filled with gas started up but wouldn't keep running.

  • If unit will not run without choke , the main jet in carb is clogged and the carb needs to be cleaned out.

Have a Zero Turn mower (50 inch deck), engine will only run with choke full on and bogs down or stalls when demand put on engine ie. mowing in high grass. Changed filters (fuel and air) with no change in...

You have a lean fuel condition. This means your carburetor is clogged. By turning choke on you are changing the air/fuel ratio in the carb. You will need to bring this in to a good repair shop to have the carb cleaned.

Your carburetor needs cleaned. It is dirty/has debris in it. If it has a bowl that is. If it has a diaphram (carburetor mounted on the fuel tank), replace the diaphram. They go bad.

I hope this helps get you going.

Stalls after 20 mins. of running fine. (Starving for gas)

From the rear of machine look at the top left of fuel tank for the fuel line.Where line comes out of tank see if it is pinched where it goes down between frame and tank, grab line and see if it moves freely. If that is OK loosen fuel cap after 10 minutes of run time to see if your vent hole in cap is working. These are 2 common problems for the L series mowers.

Engine only runs with choke full on. Dies when off full choke.

Hi Dave, it sounds crazy, but try this. Check your gas cap. It could be clogged, causing a vacuum to occur in the tank, and therefore not allowing the carb. to take on gas. It usually take 10-15 min. for this to occur. The next time you run the mower and it starts to stall out, loosen the gas cap and see if it begins to run again. If it does, then you know that the gas cap is clogged.
