I have a 1996 Vulcan 88 1500. Cranks but will not start.

I have a 1996 Vulcan 88 1500. When I try to start it just cranks but will not start. Is this a clutch problem? Battery is brand new. I have tried everything, from starting in neutral to starting in gear holding clutch in. Also, a few times when starting in 1st it slightly moves bike as if I'm releasing clutch to go. Please advise.

Is there gas? Is the petcock on? Are you getting gas to the carbs? Are you getting spark? If yes to all these then you may have timing issues.

Check for fuel to carb by loosening the drain screw in the bottom of the carb. If no fuel, check lines and fuel shut-off valve. Do this by removing the fuel line from the carb and turning the valve on to see if fuel flows. If fuel flows, you have a carburetor problem. Have it checked by a mechanic unless you can DIY.

you say the bike cranks but do you have spark? apart from that check your main fuse ,after that things get tricky and time for a shop to look it over

I have a 1994 vulcan 500. it has power going through the crank button, but will not crank. junped the starter and it turns over. no current to the starter selenoid from the switch when button is pushed....

sounds like the contacts in the switch are bad, very common on older bikes, that button gets pushed alot!1...........bypass the switch by touching the in and out hot wires and see if it cranks, if so the button needs replaced
