hi, i appretiate the responce, this does not sound like my bike. The cable goes straight down into the casting that houses the clutch plates ( i think) Brad

You do need to take the clamp on section of the shiffter off. You shouldn't loose any oil unless you have other issue. just remove the outer cover and you will see where the cable connects, piece of cake. good luck

My clutch cable to my 1979 suzuki gs 550e snapped and didnt know if it was a fairly simple fix or if it was something that would require a mechanic. Oh, and the person before me has stripped 3 of the...

Easy fix to fit a new clutch cable, make sure you leave the old cable in place until the new one is in place, this way you know the route you have taken is the same as the old one was fitted,
Dont know in respect of the securing screws when you say they have been stripped, do you mean the screw heads no longer suitable for a screwdriver or wrench? If so this can be easily removed using a drill to remove the heads of the screws, first using a sharp 3mm drill bit after centrepunching the screw head. Drill into the screw about 2mm deeper than the head of the screw, then using a 6.5-7 mm drill bit again drill the pre drilled hole untill the head of the screw comes off, some care is required to make sure you accuratly mark and drill as straight as possible. If you mean that the screw threads in the engine crankcase have been stripped then you will have to have the threads repaired using a helicoil repaire kit, once the cover is removed remove the cable nipple from the clutch acuating worm, you may have to carefully bend over the securing tag before the nipple is removed, and caerfully bend it back, after fitting the new cable, Obtain yourself some new fixing screws of the correct length and (WARNING) no longer. Replace the cover, grease the nipple at the bar end, then fit the cable
take out any free play with the addjusting screw leaving about 4 mm free play

How to change clutch cable for 78 suzuki gs750

Remove the gas tank then run the new cable along side the old cable. Unhook the old cable at the engine then hook up the new cable. Now remove the old cable from the bike. Give the cable adjusters all the slack you can get then hook the cable into the clutch handle. Pull the outer cable outward and hook the end of the outer cable on the outside of the adjuster. Pull the lever in all the way then release the lever while pulling on the outer cable. This should allow you to snap the cable end into the adjuster fitting. Below is a generic photo. I own a 1981 suzuki gs 850. the bikes clutch cable broke the other day as i rolled up to a light and shifted it into neutral. i put a new cable on the bike and when i pull the clutch and shift into 1st...

Yes.Because your old cable was old,it had stretched.New cable has been put on and the adjustment of it is wrong. It needs to be readjusted. If the bike sat around for a long time after the cable broke(and you said it did not) then a different problem may exist.Get the clutch readjusted and all should be good.Hope this helps

Would like to know how to disconnect the clutch cable at the crankcase to allow removal of cover to access the front drive sprocket

Best way is to dissconect the clutch cable at the handlebar first, lossen off the adjuster on the handle bar and take the cable out of the lever. Then the cover should come straight off, should be no need to disconect the cable from the cover in order to get it off.

How does the clutch cable release work under the clutch release cover?

The clutch cable hooks to the screw assembly. The assembly is bolted to the case. When the clutch lever is pulled in, the center part of the assembly, ( a giant screw mechanism ), pushes on the clutch rod which then pushes on the outer clutch pressure plate to separate the clutch plates. The clutch springs supply the pressure to push the clutch lever outward thus engaging the clutch to move forward. I hope this answers your question. Please rate my answer. Thanks.

How do I adjust the clutch on a 1981 Suzuki

Adjust clutch cable and "lifting mechanism",,, Loosen locknut on the adjuster SCREW ( gain access by removing the "plug" loctaed the furtherest to rear on left hand side of crank case, looks like a "cap" with a slot in it) and rotate screw IN untile you feel it lightly touch end of pushrod....now turn screw OUT 1/4 to 1/2 turn , then tighten the lock nut...... then use two wrenches to loosen the locking nuts on clutch cable, adjust so there is 4mm / 0.16 inches of free play when you slightly pull the clutch lever ..the measurement is placed at the gap of clutch handle and lever base where you see the cable attached into the handle....tis slight free play is to make sure the clutch is not "tight" engaged all the time.....when you lightly pull on lever watch the adjusting lock screw it will slightly rise...if you can not see it then place one finger on it as you pull lever. ck out pg 20 of manual at http://tinyurl.com/2cua6ak for clutch adjust, and pg 58 for cam chain adjust, and pg 78 to see blowup pic of clutch and adjuster
