Question about BMW R 1200 RT Motorcycles
Do i need to open the brake resevor lid for venting when I replace the rear pads when I push in the slave piston at the rear pads?- 2005 R 1200 rt with ABS .
Should I clean the pistons and the area around the pads first with brake cleaner so I don't get any debris or dirt on or around the piston seals. this is my first pad replacement on this bike it is at 34k miles. I know it will take several brake applications before the brakes work up a glaze to work properly, I figure a couple days of city riding should be ok before my trip next week. for some reason the inside pad wore a lot more than the outer pad. Dealer said sometimes they have a bad batch.??? The front pads are fine still over 8 mm-10mm. I use the Ft and Back atthe same time, but since they are linked, I think that means I double up on the rear brake use. I'll try to keep off the rear brake since they are linkedd.
You shouldn't have to remove the cap, as it should have been full when the pads were new, and, unless you added some brake fluid, should return to full with new pads. You can take off the cap after the brakes are replaced and the pedal depressed a few times to clean up the filler area and reseat the rubber bladder in the cap. Then the level should be at "full." You also can clean around the seal, just take care, and no grease on the rubber boot.
Your uneven pad wear, could be caused by a pad "stuck." They should be a ble to wiggle a slight bit in the holder, without pressure on them. Make sure the contact area around the pads is clean, and not rusted.
