Question about 1986 Yamaha FZ 750 FM (Japan)

1 Answer

Wont idle I have a Yamaha 50 ATV and it will not idle without the choke on full. Warm or cold it does not matter as soon as I switch off the choke the engine throttles down and dies. I pulled the carb and cleaned the jets but that did nothing. Please help; my 6-year-old son thinks I can fix anything.

'87 Yamaha ProV 50: Will cold start and idle well. After a full throttle 1-2 min run will begin & continue running very rough near idle. Will die without addtl throttle imput.

Hi Roderick:
I'm not familiar with your engine configuration, but on some of the older bikes, vibration eventually can cause a wire to break in the coil. When the engine is cold, the wires make contact and it runs, but as soon as it gets hot, the connection is broken or compromised and the spark quits or drives you crazy.
Since your bike runs when cold and quits when hot, I'd be looking for electrical rather than fuel problems.
Hope this helps.

Engine wont run after warm up and no choke

Hi, Anonymous and the usual suspects are:
1. Fuel cap or fuel tank is not venting properly.
2. Fuel filter clogged.
3. Fuel line pinched or kinked.
4. Float needle and seat sticking.
5. Float level too low.
6. Carburetor bowl vent line clogged/blocked/pinched.
7. Idle adjusting screw set too low.
8. Air/fuel mixture screw set too lean.
9. Idle port, transfer ports, slow air jet clogged.
10. Slow fuel jet clogged.
11. Faulty fuel pump.

Check the idle mixture. Sounds to me like it is too lean.

How to start the generator

Hi Joe, I had asked for a little clarification and have not received any information. I will answer this question based on the generator is in good working order and it is a recoil start. Open the petcock, (this is the fuel valve) and give it about a minute to fill the fuel bowl on the carburetor. If your generator has an engine an on/off kill switch, set to on. If the generator has an auto idle switch set it to off. If the engine has a throttle lever located under the carburetor, push it all the way down (full throttle). Pull the choke knob out completely, there is a detent on the choke for half choke, pull it past this for full choke. pull the recoil starter rapidly. As soon as the engine starts running push the choke knob to half choke, this will allow the engine to run smooth while it's warming up. Depending on the climate that you are in, warm up time will vary. After a minute or two in cold climates start pushing the choke knob in, if it starts to run poorly pull it back out too the half position and let it warm up some more. When you can posh the choke in without the engine faltering it is ready to go. In warmer climates you might be able to start the engine without the choke or in the halfway position. Robin Subaru makes some of the finest small engines available. I would choose a Robin over a Honda every time. I hope this gets your generator going, and once again this is based on the generator being in good working order. Good luck, Michael Burke.

I have a new 2010 yamaha FZ 16 motorbike at 1,500in mileage. Since the beginning the carburetor has not performed normally. It seems that the air and fuel mixture is not right. The engine stalls frequently...

First of all it is still under warranty, if you do anything un-authorised, the warranty will be void and you'll be blamed for causing it. My suggestion, for the moment "be a stink", go back to the dealer and keep bugging them until the matter is satisfactorily fixed.
The matter is air-mixture is still not right secondly the cold idle is not working properly thirdly your power needle still stuck closed so when it is warm/hot it will not supply enough fuel to run smoothly. What you may try is keeping your choke close at all time when still cold, does it make a difference, if yes then your air-mixture is lean ==>cold idle needle is still closed.
All in all I would pester the dealer to get it right without voiding your current warranty. Once your warranty have elapsed then you can fiddle around with the bike. Good ehough?

1) Have fuel tank full of a mixture of 50:1 gasoline and 2 cylce oil.

2) Have bar chain oil tank full.

3) Push down choke to full

4) Pull over engine 2 times.

5) Push choke off

6) Pull over engine. If it does not start you may have flooded engine ect.
Please let me know.

When i start the atv with the choke it stays on , but when the atv is started without the choke it shuts off. My atv is a Yamaha grizzly

The choke should only be used when starting cold. After the bike is warmed up you can turn the choke off. If it keeps shutting off after being warmed up for a few minutes, then check your gas/air ratio for the idle air mixture knob. Loosen it up 1/4 turn to allow more gas to flow.
