How do I adjust the clutch on a '79 Yamaha XS250?

How do I adjust the clutch on a '79 Yamaha XS 250? It seems to release the clutch a bit late (lever out) - but it doesn't creep when in first gear with the clutch in - I'm hoping that it is just adjustment & not something else. was also after a manual online (PDF?) for the same bike if anyone could help. thanks.

It neds to be where there is at least a little slack in the cable at the lever. Or else it will not be fully engaging.

Yamaha xs 250 wont start

Hi, Anonymous and the usual suspects are:
1. Fuel tank empty.
2. Fuel supply valve/petcock turned off.
3. Fouled spark plugs.
4. Engine flooded as a result of overuse of the enricher.
5. Vacuum hose to the fuel supply valve/petcock disconnected, broken, cracked, or pinched.
6. Fuel valve/petcock or filter clogged.
7. Fuel line to the carburetor or throttle body pinched or kinked.
8. Carburetor float stuck.
9. Fuel injectors clogged.
10. Severely discharged or damaged battery you need 12.5 volts or better and be able to pass a load test if necessary.
11. Check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
12. Loose or corroded wire connection at the coil, battery or plug between ignition sensor and CDI box.
Spark plug cables in bad condition and shorting check for leakage in the dark, cable connections loose, or connected to the wrong cylinders.
13. Ignition timing incorrect due to a faulty MAP, CKP, O2, TPS, sensors.
14. Faulty neutral, clutch lever, or kickstand safety switch.
15. Faulty fuel pump or fuse or relay.
16. Faulty CDI box.
17. A stuck bent or burnt valve.
18. Tip over sensor needs a reset.

Where can i buy a complete manual of a XS250 SPECIAL YICS. a manual to overhaul the engine and trouble shooting. thank you dan

Hi, Danielgallar the vast majority of service, parts, and owners manuals on the internet are "FREE" to download and all service manuals contain wiring diagrams in the back pages. The rest usually charge a modest fee around $10 sometimes more and there is a handful of obscure, rare, obsolete, and very old models that are no longer or never were available, then there is eBay where you may be able to find what you need at a very high price because of its age and rarity. Most of the "FREE" manuals will cover your exact make, model, and year otherwise one will be provided that comes as close as possible to your bike and will have most of the same info that an exact manual would have.
To download your manual please click on the blue links below. Good luck and have a wonderful day.

Page 6-4 from 79 fx harley davidson superglide manual got messed up. need info on clutch adjustment.

Loosen the cable adjustment that's on the right side of the bike just behind the starter solenoid. Turn the adjuster in a good bit. Remove the derby cover and loosen the lock nut in the center of the clutch assembly. Turn the adjusting screw inwards or outwards to adjust the position of the clutch release arm. Seems like 1979 was a transition year in which they changed the type of transmission that was used in the bike. The early models used the rotary top transmission and the late models used the rachet top (cow pie) transmission. If you have the rotary top transmission, adjust the center screw of the clutch until the gap between the starter and the release lever measures 3/8" to 5/8". If you have a ratchet top (cow pie) transmission, set the gap between the release lever and the small diameter section of the top of the shifting mechanism at 13/16". Once you get this set, go back to the cable adjuster and turn it outwards until you have about an 1/8" freeplay in the cable.

Good Luck
steve

I have a 2002 xv 250 and when i shift into first i can feel the clutch grab slightly i tried to adjust the clutch lever but that did not work also chain seems to be making excessive noise while riding

From what you are describing it sounds to me like your drive chain needs adjusting & lubricating regarding the clutch how longs it been since your last oil change & service if its over due the oil may have become sticky & your clutch plates are not releaseing drain the oil remove the old filter fit a new one & add fresh oil this should go a long way to remedying your problem

Clutch Adjustment Issues / 78 Yamaha XS 650

Disconnect the clutch cable at the case then see if the there is any resistance in the clutch lever in-out movement. When the tank was remounted the cable may have gotten pinched or moved out of proper routing. If I understand correctly, prior to the frame painting the clutch was okay, but after the paint it was not, and the left and right side cases and clutch were not touched. Obviously you used the wrong brand of paint. The clutch would have been fine if you had used Krylon brand paint. Post a comment and let me know what you find.
