At the base of the cable should be a threaded section with a lock nut .
unscrew the locknut and turn anticlockwise to extend the cable .
do not unwind too much as your cluch will slip .

HOW CAN I TELL IF I ADJUSTED MY CLUTCH CORRECTLY ON 2005 HARLEY SPORTSTER

Hi John, the correct clutch adjustment procedure is as follows: Loosen the jam nut on the clutch cable adjuster and screw the adjuster in about 1/2 " this should give you tons of free play at the clutch lever. Remove the the left footrest, the clutch inspection cover and slide the spring and lockplate off of the adjusting screw. Turn adjusting screw counterclockwise untill resistance is felt then clockwise 1/4 turn replace lockplate and spring, check for proper fluid level in primary and button back up. Back out the clutch cable adjuster untill you get 1/16" to 1/8" freeplay while pulling the clutch lever with your left hand and the clutch cable in the oppisite driction with your right hand. Tighten jam nut and your good to go. Good luck

I didn't know Harley's had 5th gears. When you start slipping in the top gears, it's usually a worn out clutch - assuming you don't have the clutch cable so tight it isn't engaging all the way. Is there play in the clutch lever?

Assuming there is "play" in the clutch lever when it's "out", slippage in the upper gears is a sign of a worn out clutch.

Details on removing the clutch cable from a 2005 harley sportster 883 XL custom

Find the cable adjuster in the middle of the cable, loosen the lock nut, and turn the adjuster barrel inwards to get as much slack in the cable as possible. Take the E-clip off the bottom of the clutch lever pivot pin and remove the pin. Pull the lever out and disconnect the cable from the lever. Stand the bike straight up and drain the primary case. Down on the primary, take the round plate off to expose the clutch release mechanism. Disconnect the clutch cable from the link that connects to the release mechanism. Screw the end of the cable out of the primary case. Install in reverse order and readjust the cable. Add oil back to the primary case.

Good Luck
Steve

Hi Mark, a proper clutch adjustment for big twins starts by squirting some silicone spray or Brake Kleen into the top of the rubber boot on the clutch cable and sliding it upward exposing the cable adjuster. Loosen the jam nut and turn the adjusting screw in until light resistance is felt against the clutch rod then back the adjusting screw out 3/4 of a turn and tighten the jam nut. Check primary fluid level and replace derby cover. Go back to the clutch cable adjuster and back it out until there is 1/8" free play between the clutch lever and the bracket perch. This is correctly accomplished by pulling the clutch cable end outward with your right hand and pulling the clutch lever in with your left hand and modest pressure on both hands to eyeball the free play. Tighten cable adjuster jam nut and slide rubber boot back to it's original position. On Sportster models, the procedure is the same except the clutch cable adjuster screws directly into the primary cover with a jam nut. back off the clutch cable adjuster all the way then pull derby cover and pull out adjusting rod lock nut then turn in pushrod with a flat screwdriver counter clockwise till bottoms out then turn back quarter turn. Then put lock nut back in. then adjust your cable freeplay so you have a sixteenth to an eithth inch free play at the end of your cable at the lever. thats it your done.
