Question about 2003 Harley Davidson FLSTF Fat boy

1 Answer

I am getting periodically noise and slight vibration on my 2003 fatboy. It currently has 33,000 miles. It has a bigbore kit with hp cams installed at 10,000 miles. Is this a possible sign of the cam tensioners failing?

The cam chain tensioners were not problematic after 2001...or so. It could be, but can you give a little more detail i.e. RPM range, gear, where noise is coming frm, when the noise occurs. Like under full throttle, cruise or what ever.

2006 street glide flhx. noisey valve train .geting worse.only 20.000 miles .just started in the last 2000 miles. are push rod ajustable? how can you tell if cam teniture is bad?

The stock pushrods are not adjustable. Screamin' Eagle pushrods from Harley are adjustable. To check the cam tensioners, you have to remove the cam cover on the right side of the motor to see the tensioners. You will need a flashlight to see the tensioner on the back side of the cam plate. If the plastic on the tensioners show excesssive wear, replace them. They typically need replacement after about 30,000 miles, but I've replaced them at 20,000 to 60,000+. I just put new ones in my Fatboy at 32,000. Have you recently changed from conventional oil to synthetic? This can give you a bit more valvetrain noise, due to the thinnner synthetic oil.

In the process of purchasing a 92 lincoln towcar owner thats selling cars say its had 1 owner car reads 33,000 miles for a 92 ifound that hard to believe but car is in really good shape and rides real nice...

Could be the tensioner, but could be other things too. If your worried, work with the seller to take it to a trustworthy mechanic for an inspection.

Slight vibration feeling

is it a buzzing type sound? That can happen both the driver and passengerside. there is a white clip that locks the dash to the firewall. you need to get at it as stick a piece of felt to stop the vibration. but it is very tough to reach..

Vibration At 3000 RPM

If it is a rubber mount engine, try running thru the motor mount adjustment. You WILL need a manual for this. If it's a solid mount engine look for loose bolts and nuts, and not just on the engine. Parts still shake loose on Harleys, even a 2003.

I don't know if the noise from my 2003 vw tdi is normal. Are there any valve adjustments that need to be made on this engine (1.9)? My car has 160,000 miles on it. It's not too clattery, but more so upon...

There's no tappets adjustment needed for this engine as they are hydraulic lifters. Try using 10w40 instead and see what happens or otherwise try using Moreys oil treatment with your current oil as it seems to me that the noise is more at startup and for a short period. Cheers.
