Hi,
It sounds like the starter is not engaging to the engine. Pull the starter and have it checked. Disconnect battery first. :o)
Good luck!

I thought my starter was out but that didnt do it ... It just spins when I try to start it. 2001 yamaha v star 1100 classic. I charged my battery full charge...

Hi, Timothy your starter motor is not/was not the problem that dubious title goes to the starter drive/Bendix/clutch which is a separate component that is activated by the starter motor it is a mechanical gear driven part that engages the clutch pack to turn over the engine. It has an internal mechanism that allows the gear to turn in one direction and once the engine starts allows the drive gear to free spin. If gear free spins in both directions then the drive gear has failed, it is not serviceable and needs to be replaced. When pushing the electric start button, the starter spins but does not engage to turn the motor

Starter motor spins, but does not engage
  1. Check the starter motor for a seized or binding pinion gear.
  2. Remove the flywheel inspection plate and check for a damaged ring gear.

IF THE TIMEING BELT BRAKES WILL IT LOCK THE MOTOR UP ON 1100 GOLDWING

it wont necessarily lock the motor up but the camshaft will stop turning making the valves quit moving up and down. If any valves happen to be down (open) when the piston comes up while the crankshaft is still spinning the valve meets piston and you get at the least a bent valve and possibly a hole in your piston. major trouble.

My 2002 yamaha vstar 1100 classic started and ran fine. now the starter just spins. it wont turn the engine over to start it. i already changed the battery. what could be the problem?

The one way clutch inside the motor is slipping. On the back side flywheel is a one way clutch that grabs the starter gear when the starter motor spins. It is designed to let go of the gear once the motor fires up. If the mating surface of the one way clutch and the starter gear becomes rough or chattered, it will no longer grab and turn the motor over. To repair this you will have to take off the crankcase cover and pull off the fly wheel to replace the one way clutch and the starter gear.
