Question about 2003 Honda VTX

2 Answers

I just bought this bike a month ago. It is an '03 VTX 1800. I went on about an hour and a half ride and during the ride when I got to about 60 mph the engine would sputter and loose power at points. I turned around and headed home. Just at the entrance of the neighborhood as I was turning the corner the bike lost some power. As I approached my house it started back firing and hesitating. I parked it and let it run for a while. It ideld real rough. Before I had gone on a ride I put the highest grade fuel that is available in it and the tank was full when I got home. What do you think is wrong?

That sounds like bad gas or loose battery connectors.
The vtx 1800 is known for bad grounds.
It being an 03 it is so you may have a bad ground, the grond from the battery to the engine block is not present. It was added in late 03 on the retros and early 04 on the c models.
Honda puts gounds on top of paint so the onbly ground it can get is from the threads of the bolts itself. Remove the connection and clean off paint.
I would check the battery terminal first.
The other problem may be the rectifier or stator. Honda makes some of the stators so it is most likely the rectifier.
The 1800 vtx is a fi bike so no carburetor.

Electrical ... check points. You jmight want to run some carb cleaner through it ... change the plugs. Id look at the points or what ever turns the coil on and off, real close.

MY 2006 vtx 1800 SHUT DOWN WHILE RIDING I GO AROUND 10 -20 MILES THE BIKE JUST SHUTE DOWN EVEN ON THE INTERSTATE RIDING AROUND 80 MILES A HOUR

Hi, Joel and the usual suspects are:
1. Severely discharged or a damaged battery, should have 12.5 volts or better and be able to pass a "LOAD" test if necessary, your battery may show 12.5 volts but have little or zero amps and needs to be replaced.
2. Failed alternator/generator and or voltage regulator.
3. Loose or corroded battery terminals and or cables especially the "NEGATIVE" cable, look for loose, corroded, or broken connectors inside the cable harness at "BOTH" ends.
4. Failed main circuit breaker or ignition switch, check for loose connections and continuity.
5. Failed system and or ignition relay, check for continuity.
6. Failed ignition coil, stator, magneto, points/condenser ignition/electronic module.
7. Failed CKP, CPS, CMP, MAP, TPS, or BAS sensor, corroded, loose or broken wire connector pins/sockets.
8. Throttle cables and or idle speed improperly adjusted hot idle speed should be 950 RPM to 1000 RPM.
9. Air/fuel mixture screw improperly adjusted.
10. Accelerator pump damaged or not working.
11. Water or dirt in the fuel system, carburetor or filter.
12. Restricted, blocked or kinked fuel line.
13. Fuel tank empty.
14. Fuel tank contaminated with ethanol sludge.
15. The gas cap is not venting properly or fuel tank venting system blocked.
16. Vacuum line from intake manifold to petcock broken, cracked, or not attached, carburetor vent line plugged.
17. Needle and seat stuck closed in the float bowl.

How do I check the fuel filter on a 2006 honda vtx 1800

  1. Engine
    • The Honda VTX 1800 cruiser boasts a monstrous 1,795cc liquid-cooled V-twin engine, with three valves per cylinder and a nine-to-one compression ratio. It has a bore and stroke of 101 by 112 mm, making it an undersquare, or long-stroke motor, meaning it's tuned for low-end torque. With a curb weight of 800 pounds, you'll need all that low-RPM power to get off the line. The bike does not have a tachometer, so you'll have to shift the five-speed transmission by feel.
    Fuel System
    • The bike is fuel injected, with an automatic choke. Fuel injection helps the VTX 1800 ride more smoothly than carbureted V-twins. The tank carries 5.3 gallons of fuel. In reviews, the bike had an average range of 194 miles on a tank of gas.

    Performance and Handling
    • This is a massive and massively powerful motorcycle. It corners wide, and is really meant for highway cruises rather than city riding. The bike gets a remarkable 100 foot-pounds of torque at 3,000 RPM. The suspension is rough, and you will certainly feel bumps in the road. Honda, however, has put a lot of effort into minimizing engine vibration, so the gigantic V-twin won't rattle your bones the way you expect it to. The engine makes a solid, satisfying thump without chattering your teeth.

Model vtx 1800F 2005, run good arround 30 minutes on normal ridding and then loose power at 2500 rpm like if runs out of gas. The bike was out of use durring long time i bought it two weeks ago.

Sounds like you have bad gas/ a bad fuel filter. I know on the VTX1800 models the fuel filter is located just ahead of the fuel pump inside of the tank, If the bike has been sitting for awhile the gas is bad. I would make sure that you have a fresh tank of fuel in it for starters and you might need to replace the fuel filter. First try putting fresh gas in it and letting it run through the system. Let me know how this works, jeff from fixya

I left my key in the on position for a weak on my 2006 1800 vtx. My battery is dead should I buy a new battery or can I start this bike and recharge the battery I'd I ride for a few hours

Take the battery out, check your water levels. Give the battery a good deep cycle charge with a charger before you do anything else.

Yes, You could jump it and ride it for a hefty amount of time. However riding a bike with flat batteries can cause issues on the ECU if your bike model has Electronic Fuel Injection. As the EFI relies on a minimum amount of power to run the ECU(computer), at low revs some bikes are stubourn and rev irregularly to try and produce power from the alternator to compensate for the loss in power from the battery which loads down the electronics when it is flat. If you are going to go for a hefty ride to charge the battery, try to ride out on he open road somewhere and avoid high traffic areas as well as areas where you will need to start and stop frequently.

2002 VTX 1800 backfires recelerating

If the bike is fuel injected, the module should fix it. If the bike is carbureted, you don't need the module but you will need to re-jet the carb to enrich the mix.

My Honda VTX stalled at about 60 mph. I thought

I would run a can of Techron fuel system cleaner through it. May have sucked some debris out of the tank and into the carb (injector). Also if it has a fuel filter I think I would change it.
