My 1982 Yamaha 650 maxim begins to rev around 4,000 rpm after it warms up for under 5 minutes. I have tried carb cleaner. Can anyone help?

Hi, Anonymous and the usual suspects are:
1. Throttle cables improperly adjusted or pinched.
2. Idle adjusting screw needs to be backed off.
3. Intake system air leak.
4. Fast idle choke ramp is not releasing.
5. Broken throttle return spring.
6. Damaged diaphragm or slide.
7. Faulty MAP, TPS, ATS, O2, VSS sensors or wiring/connector

My yamaha xj650 misses on acceleration and smells like it is flooding. I'M going to have the carbs tuned, (there are 4 of them) Could this be a syncronization thing?

Well it could be-but more likely a needle & seat issue. Carby sinc is an important adjustment & nearly allways makes the bike run better but it can be affected by other problems such as faulty plug caps or coils which is common on xj650s.Also if yours is equiped with YEIS(yamaha energy induction) there is a special tool required to be inserted before adjusting the carby balance.

I'd check the coils/caps first.I'm going to do a tip on testing motorcycle twin coils so check it out Then check the carbs next.
Hope this helps
regards Andy
