Timing could be the cause but also spark plugs too .
make sure the spark plugs are the one for the bike .
What you should really do is first make sure the spark plugs are clean , timing is right and also the fuel not too old in the tank .
you may have also problem with the carbies feeding the bike too much fuel or not enough .
fuel filter in the tank maybe clogged .
try this first and let me know how you go

Spark plug gap is important for starting. It is generally not worth fiddling with the carb settings. I suggest you get a tin of "QuickStart" from your local car spares shop. One puff into the back of the carb and it will start.

Cold starting good, difficult to start when hot

difficult to start when hot is almost always a fuel problem, specifically a leaking injector (s)-when it does finally start, does it sputter first, then, as you give it gas, clear up? You have leaking injectors. It could be as easy as replacing o-rings, or just replacing injectors.

2003 Suszuki DRZ difficult to start.

Make sure you are using the choke - which is actually not a choke, but a fuel enrichment circuit in the carburetor. The lever is located down on the carburetor. Also, you can try draining the fuel from the carburetor float bowl. Sometimes, just enough water will collect in there to make it difficult to start when cold.
