530 exc spacing between front fork & spacer

Should there be a spacing on the right side between front fork & spacer sleeve? If so, how much?

Front axle installation: looking at the front of the bike:

slide the wheel into position and insert the axle from the left. with axle now through the right hand fork, install nut and tighten the left fork pinch bolts to secure the axle for tightening the nut. tighten the nut to 29.5 ftlbs. and loosen the left pinch bolts. now tighten the right pinch bolts and compress the front suspension while the left (from front) is still loose. now allow suspension to rest naturally and tighten all 4 pinch bolts to 11 ftlbs.
your done.......the axle is tighten against the rotor side and the other fork is then tighten in it's natural position so as not to cause premature seal and bushing failure and increasing stiction.

Install or place the wheel into position between the forks with the valve stem on the right side of the vehicle. THEN coat the axle with bearing grease. THEN while supporting the wheel, insert the threaded end of the axle through the right fork leg and push it through the fork, the short external spacer and the wheel hub until it begins to emerge from the left side. THEN with the three notches on the bearing side, push the axle through the long external spacer and the left fork leg until the axle shoulder contacts the external spacer on the right fork side. THEN install the flat washer, lock washer and axle nut. THEN insert a screwdriver or a steel rod through the hole in the axle on the right side of the motorcycle AND THEN while holding axle stationary tighten the axle nut to 50-55 ft-lbs (68-75 Nm). THEN insert a 7/16 inch drill bit into the hole in the axle and pull the fork leg so that it just contacts the drill bit, and then tighten the axle holder nuts to 132-180 in-lbs or (14.9-20.3 Nm). THEN remove the drill bit from the axle hole. THEN install the brake caliper tightening the mounting bolts to 28-38 ft-lbs or (37.9-51.5 Nm). THEN BEFORE moving the motorcycle, pump the front brake hand lever until the caliper pistons push the pads against the brake discs because if the pads have not been hydraulically pushed out against the brake disk the brakes will not work when they are first attempted to be applied. SO, depress front brake hand lever several times to set the brake pads to the proper operating position within caliper before you attempt to move or ride the motorcycle.

How to change front wheel


Support the motorcycle with the front wheel off the ground.
Remove the caliper mounting bolts and remove the caliper
Place a plastic or wooden spacer between the brake pads in place of the disc. Then, if the brake lever is inadvertently applied, the pistons will not be forced out of the caliper.If the pistons are forced out, disassemble the caliper to reseat the pistons.
Insert a drift or screwdriver through the front axle hole on the right side to prevent it from rotating.
Loosen and remove only the left side axle nut.
On the right side, loosen the fork slider axle clamp nuts
Prior to removing the front axle, note the location of
the right side spacer and left side spacer. The spacers must
be reinstalled on the correct sides during installation.
Withdraw the front axle from the fork sliders and front wheel.

How to remove 2008 rear wheel fatboy


To remove a 2008 Softail rear wheel FIRST block motorcycle underneath the frame so that theweight of the motorcycle is off of the rear wheel, remove saddlebags if equipped, remove the belt guard and the debris deflector from the rear fork, inspect the wheel bearing end play and service the bearings if and as necessary, label the wheel spacers for left or right locationand orientation i.e. fork side or wheel side, remove the rear brake caliper from the caliper mount and support it using an elastic cord or such,For the FXCW/C modelsthe nut retainer will remain in the axle nut and does not need to be removed and if it is removed it must be replaced. For all but FXCW/C remove e-clip, remove the rear axle nut, and for FXCW/C remove the rear axle nut, loosen both axle adjuster screws an equal number of turns to remove tension from drive belt, with a suitable drift or other tool tap the axle towards the right side and remove it, remove the spacers and the caliper mounting bracket, move the wheel forward and slip the belt off of the sprocket, raise the motorcycle to allow enough clearance for removal of the rear wheel and pull the wheel with the belt sprocket from the rear fork.

To install a 2008 Softail rear wheel FIRST apply a light coat of wheel bearing grease to the axle, to the bearing bores and to the bore of the inner sleeve, roll the wheel into place in the rear fork and slide the drive belt over the drive sprocket, position the left bearing spacer between the wheel and the fork, from the right side carefully insert the axle (with its washer for FXCW/C models) through the right rear fork, the short spacer, the rear caliper mounting bracket, the long spacer and into the bearing bore, continue sliding the axle through the wheel hub sleeve, the left side spacer and the left rear of the fork, install the washer, the axle nut, and the retainer, verify correct axle alignment and the check belt deflection, check the wheel bearing end play after tightening the axle nut to the specified torque because excessive end play can adversely affect stability and handling and insufficient end play can cause bearing seizure, tighten the axle nut to 95-105 ft-lbs (128.8-142.5 Nm), install the belt guard and the debris deflector, install the brake caliper and pads, install the saddlebags, if equipped, pump the brake pedal to move the pistons out until they contact both brake pads, verify the piston location against pads, verify the position of the brake pads against the brake disc, rotate the wheel to check for any interference(s) or misalignment(s) and test the brakes for proper operation.

Change front tire


Remove brake caliper mounting screws from where they mount on the front forks. Slide caliper off brake disc and secure caliper
out of the way. Do not operate the front brake lever with the front wheel
removed or the caliper pistons may be forced out. Reseating the pistons requires disassembly of the caliper. On models with dual disc brakes, remove both calipers.

Remove axle nut lockwasher and flat washer from axle on left side of vehicle.

On right side of vehicle, loosen nut on pinch screw. Pull axle out of hub while supporting wheel.

Remove spacer and front wheel assembly.

Keep track of where each of the different size spacer went so you can put the back in the same order when reassembling.

For reinstall, you should get a manual as you will need to get torc specs. and other spacing and assemble instructions.

Remove front wheel


There should be spacers on either side of the wheel. Check to make sure they are properly positioned. (The brake should not be installable without the correct spacing.)

hi, i am fairly sure that only 1 spacer is fitted to the 1098r and the righthand side spacer is infact part of the wheel spindle, you could insert the spindle in the forks all the way, including the spacer on the left hand side and measure the gap between the spacer and the spindle end on the r/hand side, then insert a screwdriver or a length of wire through the wheel to measure the width at this point, from the 2 measurements you will work out if infact you need a spacer, hope this helps, paul

You need to work with a suspension specialist shop to lower your bike. They can take apart the forks and shock and install spacers to limit the travel and make the bike lower. This mod is easily removed in the future if you decide to sell the bike etc.

Try Enduro Engineering or Pro Action There are other local shops that do suspension work... ask around at local shops and the KTM dealer etc.

I would recommend getting the front tire balanced. Get the front wheel off of the ground and spin it to see how "out of round" it is.I know the tires on these are DOT approved, but they are not a comfortable ride at highway speeds. Head shake is usually caused when the front end gets light. (My Husaberg does it bad at 90mph) You can play a little with the suspension, or even move the forks up a little in the triple clamps, or the enevitable, get a stabilizer.

Sportster Wheel Spacer positioning


install wheel without spacers. axle has hole in it to align right side leg. center wheel and check spacing order. right side of wheel ussually has one spacer as axle is a part of its spacing.
