Question about 1992 Yamaha FZR 600

1 Answer

Today I was riding my 1992 FZR600r and I was on the highway for approximately 45 minutes straight. When I slowed down to stop my motor started making a banging sound that was rhythmical to engine RPM's. It was rather loud but after I pulled over and let the bike cool off if it was much quieter. I had to ride it home and the banging sound became much quieter with time and now I can only hear it when accelerating and it's very faint. I've accepting the fact that this is not an easy or inexpensive fix but I'm not sure exactly what it is. I'm also concerned that there may not be parts for this bike available. Does anyone here have any suggestions on where to start looking for the problem or if parts are available and if so where can I get them. I already (unfortunately) put a lot of money into this bike and now I feel like I should just write this off as a total loss. Any input is appreciated. Thank you.

After I got it home everything seemed fine with it. It still makes that noise, but only when the engine is under load. As much as I don't want it to be a bearing (which it probably is) is it possible that it could be the water pump or alternator? The sound sounded like it was coming from the alternator.

Update: I determined that the problem is the magneto. I took the cover off and it appears that the metal ring is rubbing against the coils which explains the horrible noises I have been hearing. The engine turns fine as well. My next question is is a failed magneto a sign of a more severe problem? Thank you.

Mate! doesn't sound good on the the bike front. The parts for your bike are pretty cheap and easy to get.Its great to read a description of the problem that is real and accurate. It sounds like the bottom end has done a bearing. At the least its the bottom of the conrod. When riding home you would have been very easy on the bike. The problem would have still been there but the throttle may have slowed it and dulled the sound.Great of you to get it home. Now the bike is home, what is it doing? If not a lot.Remember, oil is cheaper than metal.

Whats making the 2 things rub.You said under load is when the noise is worst.Has the charging assembly dropped a bolt?To make it out of round..Or the magnets broken up?.Strange one....A broken magn. shaft? pretty unheard of.This one you got me.Sorry.Without seeing the bike its wrong for me to say what it is.Sorry I could not be of more help

Check oil first, Low oil sensor will shut down if more than a quart low. Change fuel filter, could be fuel starvation, change the air filter. stopped up air filter will put MAF sensor out of range. PERFORM OBDII SCAN SOON.

HT coil, 99% certain, the one that's on the end of the plug lead. electrical stuff, particularly HT coils break down when warm. if it was a CDI unit it would likely go pop and that's the end of it. you can get the coil tested, or get a second hand cheap one or borrow one to see if that's it. I used to test them by putting them on a radiator to get really hot, faulty ones would give up real quick then.j
