I have a 2005 Arctic Cat 500 that will crank and run great. Push the throttle acts starving for gas. I have replaced the fuel filter, fuel line, and cleaned the tank. Also replaced carb. NEED HELP!


Try running it with the cap off the tank. Sometimes the cap will fail and wont allow air back into the tank when you draw fuel from it. This starves the engine of fuel.

Lean fuel mixture


which engine? lots of engines on 86, lots swapped too.
to work on any car engine wise this is first, ID the engine.
then the Fuel system. carb or EFI.?

lean fuel mix can be caused by.
well gee what engine, and is it EFI, nah , not in 86 its a carb.
if a carb you really need to say so as many a mech never seen one.
today. gone now for 27 years. 87 to present.

i cut teeth on carbs. in 60s
a love/ hate thing,,, today i have fancy tools, that mean them easy.
my comments are USA only , as export jeeps are vastly diffr.
I had a 88 (2 of them same time) then a 99, then a 2002 then 2008
1/2 million miles on them or more.

vacuum lines are easy, replace em or inspect test them.
if they look cracked they are roll them between fingers.
or use a hand vacuum tool attached and do a leak down test on all .
or pinch them running to see if RPM changes radically.

ill answer for CARBS (in order of likely)
  1. dirty carb. (inside)
  2. jets clogged or partially.
  3. flow level set too low.
  4. float valve sticking closed. gummy. see #1
  5. fuel pressure low. to CARB. the FSM has spec, here .
  6. lean under heavy load is power jet stuck closed , see #1
  7. lean only for an instant, fast right foot, means the accelerator pump is dead, fix it . clean carb and kit it. and it need to be adjusted per the manual. FSM.
  8. sure any air leaks below the carb cause lean... lots of ways.

Check your fuel source - the tank. Its supply line is the one common element in your fuel system.

My Sabre only went 100 miles on one tank when it went 150 miles last season on a tank. Any ideas as to why?


If you did not prep the bike for long term storage , the gas in the carb has turned to varnish and the jets are glogged up. Take them apart, clean with PB Blaster and carb cleaner. Then use an air gun to finish cleaning the jets and carb housing.

My 1986 gsxr 1100 has a stage 3 jet kit with k&n filter on each carb it keeps messing up the #1 spark plug after i stop riding it for the day. have to replace eveytime i ride.


if its fouling out then you need to move the needle down or use a smaller jet. Stage 3 are a full rich adjustment. Maybe fo to stage 2,

I lost 40 miles to the tank when I put a stage 2 in my 1100 sabre. Regained half that when I adjusted the needle and came down one number on the jets.

Will not idle


Your carbs are dirty and need to be cleaned. A tank of bad gas or old gas can gel up the jets. You buy gas, drive home, and when you get there the bike stops idling. Light gelling can be fixed by draining the carbs (screw on bottom of bowl), pulling the fuel line off the tank, and squirting some motorcycle carburetor cleaner down the fuel line. Plug the fuel line back in turn on the gas and start up the bike. If that doesn't work, using the same procedure buy some Chevron Techron fuels system cleaner, pour directly into the carbs and let sit over night (also drain tank and heavily treat one gallon of gas and put in tank) Fire up bike and let run ,idle, slow drive for 5 to ten minutes. This will usually get cycle idling without disassembling carbs. If it still wont idle you will have to take off the carbs, disassemble and clean blowing through the jets and jet passageways.

Carb 740cuts out while driving fuel filter empty


Check in tank priming pump, also check inline fuel pump. runs only while eng. is rotating.

I just went through this over the last 2 months with my 97' Standard. I tore down the carbs, cleaned, replaced all O-rings, Vac tubes and rejetted with new Factory Pro jets. Did not solve the problem. I finally determined it was the gas. I must have gotten a bad tank of the stuff. As soon as I swithed over to a name brand, Cheveron, Texaco, Exxon, etc. the problem was solved. Give that a shot before you start tearing things apart like I did.
