Witch piston is at tdc when seting the cam timing left or right when looking from carbies side

take no 1 plug out and watch the rockers for no 1 piston when the rockers are both on the back of the cam , ( valve clearance ) place a piece of wire in the plug hole to touch the top of the piston and as you carefully move the piston towards tdc the wire will move out until you get to a point where it starts to move back in
At the point where the wire moves out or in as you rock the crank at that point the TDC marks should be lining up
That is tdc no1 piston firing
also look at the other rockers and see which one is moving up (exhaust) and the other down (inlet) and that is the next piston to fire

TDC timing seting

take out the spark plug. Place finger over hole. Rotate engine till pressure is felt from plug hole. Put long screwdriver into cylinder (or look inside if possible). determine when piston is at topmost position. That is TDC.

Wich mark is tdc

the tdc mark is the C mark. turn the engine clockwise until the right cylinder is at the top and both cams are facing away from the rocker arms.The C mark should be line up with the notch in the upper hole.

Turn slowly as the piston comes up as it will spin past quickly and you will have to go all the way around again.

Seting up timing chains on a triumph stag v8

havent done one for 30+years but its not difficult ,similar to doing a jag ,piston at tdc on no one ,then inlet and exhaust fully closed on no 1 ,then you will see the timing marks line up ,think the spots have to be opposite each other and use a straight edge through the centre of the cam bolts and the spots all in line .job done its easy

If the crank is lined up to the mark, it is at TDC, meaning cylinder number 1 piston is at TDC.

Both cam pulleys should have marks, they just look a little different.

Yamaha FZ 400 engine timing

hi,normal way to set up fz is as follows,remove left hand engine cover and you will find cdi picups with a backing plate and interrupter tongue,remove all the spark plugs(dont get the leads mixed up),turn the motor by hand up to top dead centre on no1 piston,the tdc mark the plate will line up with the cdi pickup,no1 piston will now be at tdc,both sets of valves ex and intake should be closed and the tappets slightly rocking,if thay are not and any of the valves on no1 piston are open or tight,look to the end of the camshaft (where the cam fits into the bearing surface)and there will be a horizontal mark on each camshaft,release the cam chain tensioner,slip the camchain off the sprockets and rotate the camshaft untill the marks on the camshaft are exactly parrellel to the rocker box mating surface,fefit the cam chain and check alignment then retension the adjuster and check the marks again,if you have it right the marks should still be exactly parellel with the rocker box and the piston should still be sitting at tdc,if it is out by 1 tooth do it again untill it all three marks are exactly right,failing to do this WILL result in a valve sailing through the top of a piston,then it becomes a bigger job again,after you have got them adjusted correctly ,turn the motor over by hand to check that nothing is binding,if you are satisfied that everything is right,then use the starter and you should have compression,hope this helps

Crank case oil capacity

Add it in the dipstick hole,bike level on level ground. I f you have changed oil put in 1 qt and check dipstick, then slowly fill from there checking level periodically as you go. buy 3 qts at the store, buy a quality motorcycle oil NOT car oil. I recommend Castrol Syntec Actevo 10-40wt...Good luck to you friend....Tim

Timing in my car off

looking at the front of the engine the no.1 cylinder is the first one closest to the front of engine, if it is in a V type layout, then it is the closest on the right side. You should be able to find tdc by looking at the marks on the harmonic balancer. You also have to be sure that it is on the compression stroke and not the exhaust stroke.

cam shaft timing marks on back of cams ,two slots ,use a flat piece of metal to align .remove no1 spark plug and drop long thin screwdriver down it to bring piston just below tdc,then align cams so both cams are on the rock (valves closed) with knob on back cam aligning with pick up sensor left side between lobes.then bring piston up to tdc and fit belt.turn engine over twice with socket on bottom pulley to make sure no valves clear pistons.Remember to remove flat edge from back of cams i didnt last time and bent my home made tool
