Since the speeometer is electronic and gets it's "pulses" from the transmission, it stops whenever the transmission stops turning inside. Now, if one got into a situation in which he applied the rear brake hard enough to lock the rear wheel thereby causing the engine to stall, the speeometer would stop at that moment even if the bike didn't. This is my opinion.

I'll still stick by my original opinion. Looking at the way the speedo operates, when the transmission stops turning, the "pulses" from the sensor located in the transmission stop, thus the speedo reads "zero" Kph. If enough force is applied to the brake, the rear wheel will lock up (as indicated by the 21 meter skid mark), the transmission will stop turning, making the speedo read "zero". Another question concerns "Update time", how long between updates of speed does the speedometer take. It may not have had time to update or show "zero" prior to impact. I've never seen a specification of how long between updates on the speedos.

Still, I would not trust the speedo reading since it has been involved in a crash. That's like throwing a clock against a wall and then declaring it accurate. It may or may not be correct. The best way to figure out how fast the bike was going is mathmatically. It is complicated in that there are many variables to take into consideration such as weight of the bike, wieght of the rider, braking coefficient of the tires and the pavement, and even the air pressure in the tires. Our State Patrol is charged with this in the U.S.. For the average person to figure this out is quite a feat but I guess it could be done.

Like my profile says though, I work on Harleys as a hobby these days having been a millwright by occupation for most of my working life. I've been messing with Harley's since 1966 when I bought my first and only Sportster. Since then, nothing but Big Twins for me. Mostly I work on the older bikes that the dealer will not work on such as Panheads, Shovelheads, Ironhead Sportsters, Aermacchi-Harleys, and Hummers. I also work on Evolution Harleys but I don't do much with the Twin Cams.

I'm afraid that I can only answer your question as you asked it. "When does the speedo stop," It is only my opinion formed from taking into consideration of how the device operates. I am no authority other than a mechanic. I am glad that your friend that was involved in the accident is well enough to talk to you. I've had too many that weren't after an accident. I'm going to visit one of them in the hospital today and I hope he's come out of his coma. Good Luck.
