Question about 2008 KTM 250 EXC-F

1 Answer

I had no compression with my 08' KTM 250 XC-F and took it apart to find it was all carbon'd up. I'm guessing it was cause the breather from the valve cover to the intake was blowing oil. I put new piston rings and gaskets aswell as regrinding the valves. Now the bike starts and runs but now well. How do I know where true tdc is and if the cam marks line up correctly?

It should line up at tdc when the piston is on the compressing stroke at the top off the barel so basically when its just about to spark get back to me if not ok

I got a new 2017 KTM 250 SX it runs very rich and the plug is black and it's not running right depending on where you are.

Hi, Dilwyn and the usual suspects are:
1. Idle speed improperly adjusted.
2. Air fuel mixture screws not properly adjusted.
3. Inlet system air leak.
4. Leaking accelerator pump.
5. Loose low-speed jet.
6. Plugged low-speed jet.
7. Contaminated or plugged low-speed circuit.
8. Enrichner valve/choke not seated or leaking.
9. Multi carburetors out of sync and need to be balanced.

Engine Compression for Stock '08 KTM 250XC

Hey E..
176psi is fine... I have been a factory trained Yamaha for 43 years...I have seen engines run fine with 90psi..(not racing engines).. Compression is a good indicator of overall top condition of an engine. Compression Ratio is different than compression psi. Now that you have established your baseline.. you want to maintain it!!
....If you want the engine to last.. run at least a 28:1 OIL/FUEL ratio.. even a 24:1 or 20:1 is better *... settle on a ratio and RUN this ratio at ALL times... if you are fouling plugs.. get a PROFESSIONAL that KNOWS how to "jet" an engine.. you should be able to drop the main jet one size..and maybe raise the needle jet clip UP one groove..this will lean out the mixture to the correct FUEL/AIR ratio and you won't foul spark plugs and the engine will LAST a LOT longer.. >> ... *Remember..the two-cycle oil you mix with the gas ALSO lubricates the main crankshaft bearings and the rod bearings.. (replacing those are $$$$$!!)
.. If you have more questions, reply to me on here...

Bike only starts with choke on and wont idle .by the way its a ktm 250 xc 2006.air filter is clean and has new plug . wondering about needle adjustments?

If your bike ran good previously - and nothing has been changed that would require rejetting or a needle adjustment, I would look for problems elsewhere. Such as:
Has the bike been stored for more than a few months at a time? If so, the carburetor jets could be plugged with fuel varnish. Only being able to start with the choke applied - and an inability to idle are both classic symptoms of this. Remove and disassemble the carburetor. Clean it and the jets out with carb cleaner and compressed air, then reassemble. Also make sure the fuel in the tank is fresh and that the fuel strainer (usually with the fuel petcock) is clean.
There are three ingredients required for combustion: fuel, compression, and a spark (at the right time). So long as you've got each of these - it has got to run.

Wont start

Hi,

Oil from the breather is an indicator of compression bypassing the rings. This causes sump compression.
Cause of the problem is worn rings.
You need to conduct a compression test, if the compression is low then rings are probably the cause of the bike not starting.

Cheers

Jon
