Question about 2003 BMW F 650 GS

The engine surges at 2000 rpm. In nuetral it will run evenly below that but at 2000 rpm it picks up to 2500rpm

the 1.8L J18 engine, same as the older Sidekick sports used.
same engine , know it I do.
its the precursor to the J20, (j18 is under-stroked, j20 with many of the same parts. inside)

yes, that is rich raw fuel in the muffler. plus Air.
if there are exhaust cracks and then engine goes rich this can happen( a double failure)
if how ever BACK means, back to the Air cleaner, then that be different reasons, (timing)

SURGE,. you never said.

does engine get hot? 180F or more and holds (y/n)
ever get a full tuneup this decade,
most dont so i tell you, bad spark causes, misfire and raw fuel is wasted to the exhaust and sure can go boom.

surging usually means the ISC can not control idle
so it hunts, (a suzuki software engine on all 90s engines)
PCM errors, inside it. (dangerous too)
a modern car, if idle goes too high the ecu commands the ISC closed
and holds it there solid, (safe way , no hunting allowed now)]
so if this car surges, it's , lean engine.

some think flooding is surging.
and this is usually below 800 rpm,
almost stalls, then corrects, seems like a surge.

next time post rpm range of surge.?????

do not drive a surging engine, do not be like Toyota drivers. (over 800 rpm hot)

surge from 400 -800 rpm is class 1 surge.
surge from 800 to say 2000 RPM is class2, and very dangerous to some folks, (key off, get car fixed, tow it)

The ECU controls idle speeds. (hard coded servo controls)

That's a characteristic of Nissan engines when the mass airflow sensor is not working. My 1990 300ZX was set up the same way - when the mass air sensor fails, the car won't rev above 2500RPM in order to safeguard the engine. Get some air intake/throttle body cleaner and clean the mass air sensor. Get some electrical contact cleaner and clean the electrical contacts on the harness plug that plugs into the sensor. If that doesn't cure the problem, you'll need a new sensor.

The mass air sensor is in the 3-4" diameter pipe between the airbox and the throttle body.

I have 2002 audit quattro TT with 180k miles. When I do a normal acceleration the car surges and rpm drop but pick back up. If I accel hard it runs fine. Also at idle at times it varies 200 rpm like a


this sounds similar to a problem i had. as the rpm went over 2000 the engine would stop for a split second and then kick back in.
after a few days looking my garage finally found the problem was a faulty air mass meter.
this cost me £200 in total to be repaired.

no the code is most likely from a dpfe sensor for you egr system not the egr valve itself.a clogged fuel filter though might cause your low revs

i know this may sound stupid but if your battery is old or a little weak on this vehicle the idle air control solenoid will act speradicley hunting for were it should be and the vehicle will stall.replace battery

Car started surging badly and would smooth out below 2500rpm.


I read the manual and if there is a MAF fault the engine will not rev ablove 2400 rpm.
Now my problem, is that I don't want to spend $400 for a new sensor.

1998 S70 manual (wont change gear until idle is under 2500rpm)


Being it is a manual transmission and the engine was removed, it is likely the clutch and pressure plate not releasing completely at high rpms.

Surge at low rpm


Is it brand new? If so it's pretty normal. The bikes don't like running smoothly below 2k at all. As it breaks in it will get a bit better but it's difficult to not jerk it around at low RPM and slow speeds. Best bet is to keep the RPM at 2200+. Also if it is new when you get to the 1k TPS reset it should help as well.,,,
