2006 Kawasaki KLE 500 proper air filter service

Hi, Anonymous proper air filter maintenance at regularly scheduled intervals is essential for maximum horsepower and performance. It should be noted that significantly free flowing air filters may require carburetor re-jetting and tuning.
Below are the most common air filters and how they should be serviced and maintained:
1. Paper Element Filters, this type of filter is most common in less expensive motorcycles and scooters and are usually replaced at regularly scheduled maintenance, however, if they appear to be in good condition and have only normal dust and dirt on the outside they can be cleaned and re-used by using metered compressed air light enough as to not damage the paper and blow away the surface contaminants.
2. Wire Mesh Filters, these are probably the best as they are strong and extremely free-flowing, re-usable and are easy to maintain. Maintenance of these filters starts by soaking them in a commercial air filter cleaning solution or a mixture of Dawn Dishwashing Soap and water for 30 minutes, rinsing the filter in hot water, shaking out the excess water and letting it air dry for 1-2 hours. Air filter oil is optional depending on the amount of blow by your engine normally produces. If you elect to use air filter oil only a minor dusting is required.
3. Foam Filters, this type is very popular as they are easy to clean but they can easily deteriorate with age or improper cleaning solutions ie: oil-based parts cleaning solvent. They usually require a dusting of air filter oil to keep contaminants from embedding further inside the filter.
In my humble opinion, K&N filters are probably best on the market, they offer a cleaning solution kit, the proper weight air filter oil and being a discerning enthusiast I use K&N products in all my cars and bikes.

Saw is not pumping oil to bar

As you do not tell us what make and model this machine is we have to just generalise regarding oiling, start by removing the guide bar and clean out the grove and oil hole, clean around the machine bar pad and external oil delivery chanels, drain the oil tank and give it a good wash out with a suitable cleanig fluid ( if there is a filter in the tank this will help to clean it out ), put some lite oil in the tank , re assemble the bar and chain, run the machine , with the tip of the bar close to a suitable log, you should see a line of oil sparayed from the end of the guide bar.

I have a 2004 fat boy and when i ride for a while there are streaks of oil on the oil can. someone said the oil breather tube might be clogged. can you tell em if this sounds correct and if so can you tell...

Regrettably, this is a common problem. You're engine is what we call a "Head Breather" meaning that the crankcase pressure is vented from the heads. And, as per EPA regulations, this vented pressure is directed into the air cleaner to be run through the engine. As the air is coming out of the engine, it brings with it small droplets of oil. These droplets of oil are caught in the air filter and coalesce into larger drops. The drops are then blown out of the air filter cover by the air passing by it as a result of the bike going down the road.

You can reduce this by keeping your air filter housing cleaned regularily. Or, you purchase a kit that will reroute the vented air from the crankcase. The air is vented into the air filter housing through the two large diameter bolts to the front and rear of the air filter. These bolts are hollow.

Good Luck
