Question about 2005 Honda CRF 250 R

1 Answer

Won't restart when warm

Initial start is normal. when warm does not want to start. hot start or not. just checked the valve clearance and changed some shims. passenger side intake may have been stuck, but at last check the shims we put in were within tolerance.

Runs alright when cold but when its warm it pops n runs bad, does it need the carbs cleaned or the lower end rebuilt

if it is a 2 stroke then it may be the crank shaft seals only that need replacing
however if it plays up when warm I would be looking for failures in the electronics section---coil failure when hot, ignition module when hot, charge circuit failure when hot etc
if 4 stroke check valve clearance when hot

Why does it backfire on warm restarts?

readjust the valve clearances
B& S engines are renowned for stretching the valve stems during use
creates hard /no starting when hot
check for coil wire touching the engine and shorting out

95 geo prizm 1.6L starts fine when engine cool but when warm it cranks fine but won't fire. I changed plugs, wires, dist cap & rotor & it started fine til got warm again. What might be my issue?

toy 4afe engine.
warm no starts.
so did you check for spark loss , warm? or hot?
if not why not?
if spark is good, did you use test fuel to see if added fuel starts it?
are the the spark plug tips (yes, look) soaking in gas (failed) or dry.?
this is how you diagnois all Gas engines. even a lawn mower.

ever do the 60k lash check on valves?
put in a new timng belt, may be yours slipped, its a 60k service.
do the lash checks at 60K,
if lash is too tight, the gap can go to zero hot, killing compression
Valve clearance (engine cold), (in.):
Intake (0.006) 6 thou
Exhaust (0.014) 14 thou.
why not do the FULL 60k tuneup now. not cutting corners or skips
and win.

is the CEL out , hot driving>
the check engine light.??

Briggs and stratton engine misfiring cylinder

have a tappet clearance check done when the engine is hot and you will probably find no valve clearance. The valve stem stretch when hot and hole the valves slightly open causing the problems you describe as well as making hot starting difficult.

Truck will start and run until it gets hot. turn it off then try to restart engine just cranks but will not start.let it sit for awhile then it starts right up?

Possible that the fault seems related with the fuel pump . So check the fuel pump pressure, check the fuel delivery and calibrate the settings. Also the fault must be double checked for the ignition - spark intensity and fuel delivery only after the engine is warmed up and swap and change parts to confirm before you invest.
check the valve settings, clearance and compression. confirm the timing of the igntion.

When its cold it starts without problems. i cant start up warm engine on yamaha xs 400.?

Check the valve lash. Sometimes, if the clearances get too tight, when the valves are hot the get long enough that they won't seat properly. I don't have the manual, but I'll bet .003 on the exhaust and .002 on the intakes are close. Put the motor at TDC and check them with a feeler gauge.
If they're not within tolerance, find the factory specs and proceedure for adjustment. This is an often overlooked part of routine maintenance. Good luck!

My 17 kw gen start up easy runs about 5 min and then start to miss, let it cool down and then restart and does the same thing.

hi it sounds like to me that you need to check your valve clearances. It sounds like as the engine warms up, the metal expands and the valves then do not close fully, hence the miss. The engine cools and the metal contracts, valve clearance is good, engine runs fine. Check the tolerances right before you start the engine, then after it starts to miss.

What is the difference between hot and cold vavle clearances

When it is stated that valve clearance should be set when hot, you first adjust the clearance on the cold engine after assembly to the hot setting specs if they are the only ones given, then let the vehicle warm up to operating temperature. Then adjust the clearances again.
If it is just a tune-up(undisturbed engine), let the engine warm up to operating temperature, then adjust.
The reason is that metal expands as it heats up, which affects the valve clearance.
