Could you be more specific about what you are seeing? I suspect you are getting a self diagnostic code, where the tach indicates a certain RPM for a few seconds, then reverts to engine RPM, then back to the code RPMs. There are 3 systems monitored by this. The EXUP, TPS and Fuel level sensor. If there is a problem with one of those systems, the self diagnostic feature will trigger the tach needle to send the code by holding a certain RPM no matter what RPM the engine is at, then returning to engine RPM.

Hi,
In the owners manual it describes some fault codes and it states that if your tacho sits on 8000rpm it is a fuel level indicator fault.
You've probably had it fixed by now but just in case someone else has the same problem I thought I would share what I think it could be.
Hope this might help.
Regards Duane

i'm no bike expert but have been reading up on this site , sounds as if its either the TPS if you've got carbs or the EXUP pulley/valve ,anyway have a read up yourself it may give you a clue as to whats going on

As im driving my bike the clatter comes in around 3000 rpm and gets louder ans faster as i gain rpm. could it need valve adjustment? or what kind of problem does it sound like im having. its a 99 yamaha r1

if its valve chatter you will hear it just under the valve cover pretty pronounced, but usually valve chatter gets quieter as the bike warms up, you might look into your cam chain adjuster those get loud and chatty at higher rpms.
