Question about Harley Davidson FXR Super Glide Motorcycles

On my 1991 FXRS, one of the cylinder studs was stripped out. A shop installed an insert but didn't get it in far enough causing this stud to be 1/16th of an inch higher than the rest of them. My head gasket blew and I found that the head bolt on this stud was complketely loose. When I pulled it apart I also found the new stud was bent. I bought a new head bolt and am replacing the stud. My question is will the one stud being up a 16th of an inch effect the torqing .

    WATCH OUT! If the stud is not to proper depth, the torque will be spread on less area and fewer threads. This will probably result in a Re-strip!

Torque is not impacted by length of stud. Torgue is just that, the force on the material. Now if there are retainers or keepers, or something llike that used on the stud then being too tall may have an impact. Be absolutely sure to use a thread locker on these parts, something like Loctite, etc.

if the bolts and studs are stripped then you will probably need thread inserts to make new threads for the bolts and studs , which you get from any good spare parts shops or tool stores

Heads Secured With Screws
1. Check to make sure there are no nicks or burrs on
sealing surfaces of cylinder head or crankcase.
2. Install a new cylinder head gasket (with printing up).
3. Install cylinder head and start four new hex flange
4. Torque screws in two increments; first to 22.6 N·m
(200 in. lb.), then finally to 41.8 N·m (370 in. lb.).

Heads Secured With Mounting Studs, Nuts, and
1. Check to make sure there are no nicks or burrs on
sealing surfaces of cylinder head or crankcase.
2. If all studs were left intact, go to Step 6. If any studs
were disturbed or removed, install new studs as
described in Step 3. Do not use/reinstall any
loosened or removed studs.
3. Install new mounting stud(s) into crankcase.
a. Thread and lock 2 mounting nuts together on
smaller diameter threads.
b. Thread opposite end of stud, with preapplied
locking compound, into crankcase, until specified
height from crankcase surface is achieved. When
threading in studs, use a steady tightening motion
without interruption until proper height is
obtained. Otherwise frictional heat from engaging
threads may cause locking compound to set up
Studs closest to lifters must have an exposed
height of 75 mm (2 15/16 in.).
Studs furthest from lifters must have an exposed
height of 68 mm (2 3/4 in.).
c. Remove nuts and repeat procedure as required.
4. Check that dowel pins are in place and install a new
cylinder head gasket (printing up).
5. Install cylinder head. Match numbers on cylinder
heads and crankcase. Make sure head is flat on
gasket and dowel pins.
6. Lightly lubricate exposed (upper) threads of studs
with engine oil. Install a flat washer and nut onto
each mounting stud. Torque hex nuts in two stages;
first to 16.9 N·m (150 in. lb.), then finally to 33.9 N·m
(300 in. lb.).

Wheel stud

splines? you meant treads?
remove wheel, then drum. no year stated , but some years
have drum bolts, ,
see 2 screw holes in the dump, insert 8mm bolt to hole
screw in both bolts an drum pushes free.
the drum is off, , remove stud , put in new stud.
or if the new stud dont fit, the drum is bad. new drum time.

Wheel studs broke off

A shop can install new studs in a short time. The old studs can be pressed out or punched out, and new ones installed and drawn into a tight fit.

Thermostat broken stud

You can replace it. There are several types of screw extractors out there. They usually come with a drill bit for the correct size extractor. You will need to find out what size stud it is. Once you have determined that chose the appropriate size drill bit and extractor. Lowes or home depot carry them. Drill into the center of the broken stud. Be careful not to drill too deep as you might damage the thermostat housing. Once you have drill into the stud use the extractor to remove the broken stud. Napa auto parts or autozone should carry the stud size and length that you need. Purchase a stud and 2 plain nuts that match the thread of the stud. The nuts will be used to install the stud. Thread The stud into the thermostat housing. Once it is tight by hand stop. Thread the first plain nut onto the stud far enough so that you can get the second nut onto the stud and have a thread or two sticking out of the second nut. Once the two nuts are on the stud hold the first nut with a wrench and tighten the second nut tight against it. This will allow you to finish installing the stud. Once the nuts are tightened together, use a wrench (on the second nut only) to run the stud down into the thermostat housing. Do not overtighten the stud as you may crack the housing. Run the stud down into the housing unit the stud is the same height as the existing stud. Then use a wrench to hold the second nut and loosen the fist nut away from the second nut. Remove both nuts from the stud. You stud is now installed and you can reinstall the thermostat. If you have any questions you can email me at Good luck

The bolts were loosen on driver from tire now it's stripped wut to do

you will have to remove the wheel, brake caliper and rotor and remove the studs. Then you will need to install new studs for which you will need a stud installer tool or you can use a lug nut and washers to pull stud through the hub. the stripped out studs can be removed with a hammer. make sure you have the clearance in the back of hub before pounding on them.

We had a new serpentine belt replaced a couple of months ago and it just came off. How can I put it back on? Also the lug nuts seem to be stripped.

Before we get to putting it the Belt back on...
Look at the alignment of the Pulleys. Most times the Tensioner or Idle Pulley are "canted" - meaning pitched or leaning forward, which causes the belt to "run off" the pulley - throwing the belt.
With the Belt off: check side-to side play for each one of the Pulleys by hand, especially for the Tensioner and Idle Pulleys. There should not be any side-to side play. If there is any other Pulleys that are canted - check if they are properly tightened. A new belt should not have come off on it's own without some other problem.

GENERAL/Standard Rules to Removal the Serpentine Belt with a Tensioner:
A. Find the Tensioner(s). (See Diagrams on Link)
B. Using a Serpentine Belt Tensioner Tool, Or Wrench OR Ratchet, Rotate/Move the Tensioner USING THE AVAILABLE NUT (on the Pulley or Arm Base) OR the OPENING (3/8ths or 1/2 inch square opening) rotating the Tensioner Pulley/Arm - moving it away from contact with the belt and towards the area where the belt is not in contact with the Tensioner Pulley. The Tensioner is spring loaded, and is hard to rotate/move.
C. Remove the loosened belt off one of the other more easily accessed Pulleys.
D. DO NOT quickly release the Tensioner, but gently allow the Tensioner to rest in its closed position.

Standard Rules for Installing the Serpentine Belt with Tensioners:
a. Pick a Pulley that is most easily accessed. This will usually be on top. This will be the last Pulley that the belt will go on.
b. Using the Diagram: Install the new Serpentine Belt on the remainder of the Pulleys....over, under, left right.
c. Using a Serpentine Belt Tensioner Tool or Wrench or Ratchet Tool: Rotate/Move the Tensioner Pulley/Arm "away" from Belt contact area on the Tensioner. This spring is pretty hard and with a new belt, it will be even harder to install. Rotate/Move this to as-close to the maximum allowed inorder to have enough slack in the belt to get it up and over the last pulley.
d. Using your other hand - Pull the Belt up and over the Last remaining Pulley.
e. Before releasing the pressure on the Tensioner, visually inspect the remainder Pulleys and the Belts' Positioning on them.

Regarding the Strip Lug -Studs.
Is this on the wheels with Rotors (Disc) or Drums? If the tire was not properly mounted, or the Lug Nuts were not properly Torqued; this will cause the Lug Studs (bolts) to be stripped.
With the vehicle raised and properly supported by jack stands:
For Rotors:
Remove the Tire, Brakes (Calipers/Pads) and Rotor, exposing the Wheel Hub (Bearing) Assembly with the Studs fully exposed. Rotate the Wheel Hub to a location where the Lug Studs can be clearly removed FROM THE REAR OF THE WHEEL HUB ASSEMBLY.
Using a impact hammer or mini sledge hammer: Hammer the Lug Studs back thru the Wheel Hub Assembly.
Remove the loosened Lug Studs.

For Drums:
Raise, support, remove the Tires.
Remove the Drums off the Wheel Assembly.
Using a impact hammer or mini sledge hammer: Hammer the Lugs back into the drum, removing from inside the Drum

Purchase the new, correct size and length Lug Studs and new Lug Nuts. If the Studs were stripped, most like the Nuts are too.
To reinstall the Lug Studs: Purchase an additional two (2) Lug Nut that fits that Lug Stud. Also purchase several Large Heavy Duty Washers that can fit on the the Lug Studs.

Place the Lug Stud back into the Wheel Assembly from the Rear (Rotors) or from inside (Drums). Use High Temp Grease for the area of the Lug Stud Splines that have to be "drawn" into the Wheel Assembly (with Rotors) or into the Drum.
After the Lug Studs are "IN" as far as they will go: on the outside place at least two (2) of the Washers on Lug Studs. Use a Lug Nut and tighten as far as possible down-on the Lug Stud as possible.
Next: Using an Impact Wrench tighten that Lug Nut down/on, drawing the Lug Stud into the Wheel Assembly/Drum. Check the rear of/inside the Wheel Hub Assembly/Drum. The Heads of the Lug Studs should be firmly against the Wheel Assembly/Drum.
If you do not have a Impact Wrench - use at least a 24-in Breaker Bar and Tighten the Lug Nut on, drawing the Lug Stud into the Wheel Hub Assembly/Drum. This takes longer and alot more work, compared to 10-seconds using the Impact Wrench.
Repeat as necessary.

grind a flat spot on the round head of the new stud this should give enough clearance to install it. don't pull the hub this will damage the bearing.

Lug stud

Here's another thought - if the stud isn't too badly stripped, you may be able to use a re-threading die to restore the threads. The thread type and size will depned on the make and model of your car. An autmotive parts store can usually help with this.

If you must replace the stud,

A bad stud can usually be driven out through the back of the axle flange. You said the stud was stripped. You can:

Force one of the lug nuts onto the stripped stud maybe two to three turns , then take a drift pin and drive the stud out the back. The stud will have grooves that hold it in place on the axle flange. You willl hhave to hold the stud head with vice grips and remove the lug nut to get the stud out.

To install a new stud, insert it from the back, add a little grease to the knurls (grooves) and pull it into place with a lug nut. The stud must be firmly seated in the axle flange.

R65LS Restoration - Another Valve Cover Problem

The OEM gaskets have adhesive built on to them. This is always the side with printing on any BMW gasket. Clearly the head has to be clean when installing a new gasket for the adhesive to adhere. I have a similar leak problem on one bike, and it appears the surfaces aren't smooth enough to seal with oe gaskets. My solution is aftermarket "silicone" gaskets, which do the trick, but are a bit tricky to use. No glue with these. It appears a lot of times previous owners are taken by surprise that there are outboard studs on the valve covers and try prying the cover off after only removing the center nut. This hurts the sealing surfaces, of course. When the bike was new, the OEM gasket was installed with the factory adhesive adhering it to the cylinder head only, and it didn't leak. Subsequent leaks were caused by incorrect procedures by various previous owners, untrained mechanics, etc. A lot of times the threads in the cylinder head for the center stud get stripped. This occurred especially with the too-short studs, as they didn't get threaded into the head enough.
