Some of the newer dvd's are made double layer and recently they've been working on triple layer dvd's. basically a single layer dvd holds 5gb of information, a dual can hold 10gb and a triple can hold 15gb (those are approximates). by making it more layers, they can put the fullscreen and the widescreen edition on the same movie disc. some of the 'lower end' dvd players don't have the capabilities to play these dual or triple layer discs.

It sounds that the optical pickup unit is faulty. Put a disc cleaning disc into the set, and play it once. If the fault is with dust or dirt, it will be cleared out. If not, replace the optical pickup unit.
New player? Under warranty? Take it to whoever installed it. Sounds like a weak laser, or a laser alignment problem. Could also simply be a dirty laser lens, but proper cleaning requires disassembly (those laser cleaning discs are hit-n-miss, and I've seen them actually damage the laser pickup, so I do not recommend them).
I have the same problem. My unit has been sent in for repairs twice. Each time the DVD deck has been replaced. After this last repair it stopped playing dvds in 1 week. I know its not a solution but at least your not alone. I am asking for a replacement this time around.
Just go to the set up menu ( Your screen should say setup at the upper center of your screen ) Then press 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, 0 with your remote control and a second menu will apear, on your left side press the second option and select parking bypass to on.
Make sure that you have a good ground, Connect the orange wire and red wire are both connected to a reliable ignition wire and that the yellow wire is connected to a straight battery source. And that your fuse, if any, is tight and good. If this does not help, there may be internal problem of many sorts.
I'm having the same problem with my unit but it didn't happen right away and I bought this off of a friend. It slowly happened over time where it would get worse. I took it apart and there was a plastic piece out of place so now it will play dvds but still says bad disc to my cds even though I cleaned the lens on it. Any type of solution would be great.
