Runs sluggish for 5 min then stalls, wont start again for hours

One Week ago I road my bike, Yamaha xj 700, and it ran great. I put it in the garage for 10 days and now when I fire it up it runs for about 5 minutes on the road and then dies. If I let it sit for a while it will fire right up again. When it does run it is sluggish and the exhaust has a much lower pitch. What could have gone wrong in those 10 days?

1985 Yamaha XJ700 Maxim will not charge battery during operation?

Question edited for clarity.
Question moved to model category.

I am in two minds whether you have two issues or just one/

Bike runs and stall out, could be a few things, like a fuel hose air lock, I have seen that a few times. Or it just ran out of electrical power because the battery went flat (total loss system) I had that on a Kawasaki H1 500 triple that I took to the Isle of Man TT. I rode it home with a car battery on the back rack. That was caused by a faulty rectifier.

My guess is that you have a broken wire in the harness somewhere. Is the battery connected to the right polarity. That is an easy mistake to make. Tip, get the wife's red nail polish and put a line around the positive terminal edge and paint the hard to see black, raised plus + sign.

See if you have an Motorcycle Electrician near you. You need someone with access to the wiring diagrams, the ability to read them and the test equipment. This link will find someone close to you.

Gas problem fixed on my bike. Now the problem is keeping it running. It starts after a few tries but it stalls right out and than it's hard to start back up. I have an 1985 Yamaha 700 Maxium

I wonder what the fuel problem was. It kind of sounds like the idle jet, and/or low speed jet needs to be cleaned. Also while your in there, i would clean all the jets, and check the float bowl height.

Great bike I use to have a 81 XJ650J, hell of a bike, i miss it.

I have a 1986 yamaha virago 700 that wont run properly

2 things need to be done first start your bike get a can of wd40 after your bike is warm and running spray around the carb jointsall 4 of them if your engine changes rpms up or down you have a intake leak ether your carb joint gaskets or o-rings need replacing or your carb joints are old and need replacing. at this point wont hurt to have you carbs cleaned also

Stalls after 5 min of riding, but a few hours later it runs fine

the battery is failin or not charging rite-on a coil ignition u always need 12 V cause the bike doesnt feed off alternator like a car--test it -may still be good but charge it before cruzing

1990 virago 535 starts and runs great for about 3 or 4 miles

Pull the float bowl caps off the carbs and then spray carb cleaner into the main jet and all other accessible ports on the carbs. Chances are there is a build up of water condensation in the carbs.

1992 kawasaki Vulcan 750 stops running

Check the intake manifold/s, even a small leak will make it run poor. Being stored for five years then putting it into use, you may have a blocked main jet. Sea-foam is a great product and I would have used that product to store the bike but not to get it running. It is slow acting so it doesnt work like carb cleaner.
