I didnt notice before, but no, the plugs really not wet after kicking it over 6 or 7 times. just today i pulled the carb. and cleaned it and the jets thouroghly. This all started when i was at the dunes, 4th gear, throttle pinned, the bike just sputtered and died. It hasn't started since no matter what i try. any help is GREATLY appreciated. Thanks

I can't help with the compression question, but are you positive the fuel is making it through the carburator and into the cylinder. If you kick it over 5 or 6 times and then pull the plug is it really wet?

I have a 1979 Harley Davidson Golf cart that I can't start, any ideas?

Hi Dennis, worked on Harley's for 32 years, Harley motorcycles, Harley snowmobiles, Harley pedal pushers, Harley trikes, Harley flat trackers, Harley sidecars, even a Harley streamliner for Bonneville, but never put a fingerprint on a Harley golf cart. But hey it's just a glorified lawnmower engine right? Let's assume the engine was running before it was stored, you need 4 things for an internal combustion engine to run:
1. Spark, make sure you have the correct spark plug NGK BP5ES
and is gapped at .025" and when the threads are grounded against a clean unpainted part of the engine it sparks when turning over the engine. You might want to install a new one or clean the old new one as it could be gas or oil fouled.
2. Fuel, with proper mixture of 2 stroke oil, keep in mind the carburetor jets and air passages could be gummed up from old dead fuel, or not, mmmmmm not sure about 2 stroke fuel maybe the oil mix prevents varnish, If you have not gone through the carburetor I would recommend dropping the float bowl and dumping whatever mysterious substance or contamination you find.
3. Compression, stick your middle finger over the spark plug hole, turn the engine over and if get's properly blown off, then you probably have enough to fire.
4. Timing, make sure your points are clean, and gapped at .023" and will spark when opened and closed with the spark plug installed and hooked up.
I would also recommend purchasing a service manual, OEM part number 99496-80 for $40 You might be able to order one through Harley Davidson or visit the website below.
Finally, if all the above check out ok, try spraying some starting fluid/eather into the air cleaner or carburetor throat while trying to start the engine. If it still won't fire you can contact me at xlch@mail.com for plan "B" Good luck and have nice day. VintageGolfCartParts com

You mean start? Try putting proper gas/oil mix in it. Check for spark by pulling spark plug, ground metal case to engine metal and pull start cord. Look for spark in the plug's gap. If it sparks, you have a carburetor problem. Most likely gummed up with old gas. Needs to be removed and cleaned or replaced.

Wont start

Remove the spark plug and check for spark--it should be blue and snappy with a fresh plug gapped at 0.020". If nothing or weak, remove the left side engine case to expose the flywheel and ignition module. Check the module gap by inserting a thin business card into the pole gaps, turning the flywheel until the magnets are under the module. Loosen the module screws and allow the module poles to contact the magnets. Tighten the screws and rotate the flywheel somewhat to release the card. Remove the stop switch wire from the body of the module and try for spark again. If still nothing, replace the module using the above procedure to install. If the first test produced good spark, then pour a little fuel mix into the plug hole and try for start--it should pop several times. If so, then pursue fuel delivery problems--check the fuel filter, air cleaner, and muffler for plugging. check the fuel lines for decay or other problems. Make sure that you have fresh fuel mix in the tank. Hope some of this helps!

455 wont run

Make sure the muffler has not become plugged. Check the flywheel key as it may have sheared off for some reason causing the timing to be off, yet still generate sparks. Are the sparks blue and snappy? If not, check the ignition module gap to the flywheel magnets--use a thin business card for a gauge. A wide gap can cause weak spark. Hope this gets you running again!

Husqvarna 51 died and wont restart

hi
if you have a good compression,a strong enough blue spark and carburetion for the fuel air mixture try priming the engine(put small amount of gas in the spark plug hole)then start the engine. If the engine runs only the gas you put inside the cilinder there is a carburetion problem to find and fix.
let me know regards savumihai71

Do you have fresh gas? If so is the mix right? If you can get to the carb easy spray some carb and choke cleaner in it. Check the gap on the new spark plug. The gap should be located somewhere in the manual. The big problem is making sure that the mix is right. To much oil in gas will foul plug smoke like crazy and foul the plug and hard to start. Not enough oil and you can seize it up.

Good luck let me know if this helps.

My weedeater edger over heats and freezes up. it gets very hot, smokes around the spark plug, the spark plug is coverd with soot and it won't start again

Are you using mixed gas? The gas needs to be mixed 50:1
You will have to use 2 cycle oil. If you are using mixed gas, than you can buy a cooler spark plug.
Sounds like the spark plug is not properly gapped.
