Question about 2002 Ducati 998 S

1 Answer

Riding a 2001 748 at track days, it runs fine for several sessions, then loses power, starts rattling and the oil light flashes. I can barely limp it back to the pit. It starts and idles after I have the problem. The oil is at a normal level. It seems this only happens when it's hot, but not always. The bike is track prepped, with the kickstand removed and a bypass on the kickstand senson, and all the lighting wiring disconnected and removed. Also, when I turn it on, it doesn't always want to turn over. All indicators come on, but the starter won't engage. Probably two different problems, but they may be related.

Loss of Power. Could be due to gasket leak. Intake and exhaust valve problem. If the oil was low then the engine would have ceasedby now. Starter not engaging. Do you mean that the starter runs and does not rotate the flywheel? If so, then the magnet that retracts the starter pinion after the engine starts could be non functional. Or if you mean that the starter motor does not rotate despit all the lights coming on could be the carbons getting wornout. When they make a contact the starter works, and when they are not in contact the moter does not work even if all the lights are on.

Was riding when I started losing power. Then began pouring out smoke let it sit a few days, drained carbs and it fired right up,seamed to run fine except it still had little power.whats wrong with it

You probably broke a cylinder ring. The cylinders are dry when you haven't started them for a while and sometimes that extra friction catches a ring just right and breaks it. A break in the ring kills compression and therefore power. Also the ring allows oil to come up from the oil pan into the combustion chamber where it doesn't burn and you get all the smoke.
Run a compression check on each cylinder by putting a compression tester in the spark plug hole. If one reading is a lot lower than the found your culprit

Case tractor problems

Have you checked the ignitions circuit? Could be an electrical short, bare wire???
Also check the breather on the fuel tank, its probably in the filer cap.

Yamaha waverunner won't idle and losing power

L stands for limp mode
it is a mode that the ECM selects to prevent serious damage to the engine ( from you lack of oil )
have the fault codes read then reset with the scan tool

After 30K miles the pressure gauge is exceeding 32(mid range) It actually started on a hot day in traffic. Pressure was first very low and bike wanted to die. Limped home let it cool and runs ok, but...

From my experiences with earlier models, H-D oil pressure gauges are wildly inaccurate. It could be the sender unit that is causing the change that you're seeing. Watch it for a few days and see what it does. If your engine has an oil pressure problem, it will start rattling like a can of rocks and it will not run well. You might want to try changing the oil pressure sending unit.

Good Luck

these bikes have a lot of carb issues suggest replacing the jets and taking it somewhere to get a new tune, try ivans jet kit . you are still having carb issues it seems like also make sure your whole charging system is working correctly, i.e. rectifier, stator fuses simple things like your oil level can also effect performance

Flashing oil light/ loss of power

Check your converter on your exhaust when it's running and see if the noise of rattling is coming from there. If it is you have a plugged converter,it's broken up and in piece's which will make noise and no power especially when calling for power.Be sure to let exhaust cool before repair is done.If the engine is making the noise like a knocking sound you should bring it to have it checked.Hope this help's.
