How hard is it to lift clean and refit the gasket am i better off to take it to my local dealer and if so a rough estimate on the cost of doing so

It depends on the gasket , a valve cover gasket would be less then an oil pan gasket ! Both valve cover gaskets $150- $ 190 , Intake manifold gasket $ 547 - $698 , Head gaskets $1,000 - $ 1,200 oil pan gasket $ 211 - $ 269 These are just estimates , not all repair shops charge the same . Here in Pennsylvanian local shops like pep boys charge $115.00 per hour , AAMCO does general repairs too , an they charge $ 95.00 per hour . I found the local Chevy dealer to be one of the cheapest around at $86.00 per hour ! It just depends on where you live ! you have to check around , Do let them bully you either , Ask what they charge to do you particular gasket an if they give you the run around tell them you'll try someplace else ! It will be according to the Make , Model and Age of the vehicle and which part is broken or which pipe is leaking .
Try to look and see where the leak is coming from before contacting anybody. If you can identify which part it is it will be easier to get an estimated price.
I would contact several local back street garages rather than a Major dealer.
The major cost is whatever the Labour charge is to end up for the removal and refitting of the faulty part..

It's impossible for anyone here to give an estimate because rates and parts availability vary from state to state. I'd call your local Volvo dealer parts department to get an idea of the parts costs or even if they can find one. You may have a better chance of locating the parts in a junk yard.

call the local used engine people in your area. ask them about your local engine swap mechanic to get an estimate and plan the procedure. those vehicles are no longer available in our area but some parts can be found. you may consider the cost before doing so. as the value is diminished

the gasket set is $50 or less depending on model type, now depend where you seek to have the repair done reflects the charge. dealerships rape you, and if you can live with that then take it to them, I do not go to a dealership unless i need a special clip or snap, never will i buy a vehicle or have service done by one. I refuse giving free money to companies that rape you for their product in the first place. I would tackle that yourself, or go to a reputable garage that gives a flat rate.
I personally would charge you $ 175.00 . Double that or triple that at dealer. Great day for a grease monkey!!!!!

your first mistake is going to a dealer to have work done. they always charge a buttload for work, to make up for lost revenue throughout the year.
but yes, replacing some gaskets can get costly. oil pan gaskets, head gaskets, main seals. and sometimes you need to remove the engine to fix it

ford has a technical service bullitin out on this vehicle for the intake gaskets leaking causing a vacum leak that set codes 171 174. the solution is to have the intake manifold gaskets replaced . call your local ford dealer and see what thay can tell you about this bullitin.
