Clutch master cylinder

Master cylinder for clutch dried up,slave cylinder still wet, how much trouble to rebuild master cylinder? This is on a 650 Night Hawk 1983

Why do you think you have a problem with the master cylinder. If it is dry it means the fluid has been lost somewhere in the system and the master cylinder is not necessarily at fault. When yo say the slave is wet, do you mean it is wet on the outside or still contains fluid? If it is wet on the outside then that is the problem. If you cant find a leak then try filling up the master cylinder reservoir again and bleed the system...it might be ok. Rebuilding is a simple job, you just need a set of cir-clip pliers but you need to check the bore carefully because you get pitting and corrosion that prevents the o rings sealing. In some cases the units need to be resleeved whilst in others a light hone is sufficient to restore the surface.

The clutch probably has a slave cylinder that does the work. It might be dry or seized. check that first.

Why is the clutch on the floor


Clutch "on the floor" is rather unusual... Most of all clutch spring is the feel of the pressure plate holding the clutch disc against the flywheel... but there is typically a pedal return spring that will take out the slack before ANY pressure is applied to your throw-out bearing.

Clutch MALFUNCTIONS will affect gear engagement... excepting (of course) clutch slippage.

For this trouble you need to take a quick look under the dash at the pedal hangers... and piston plunger that activates the clutch cylinder (typically on the outside of your firewall).

Now look at the clutch MASTER cylinder... the connecting HOSE and the SLAVE cylinder. Any fluid TROUBLE IS THE KEY to your trouble.

The ideal TROUBLE would be a split hose... but compared to a FULL CLUTCH rebuild all of these parts are cheap and easy to replace. Typically only requiring bleeding the cylinders... and you are back on the road.

If everything looks good you are MOST PROBABLY going to need a new clutch master, slave, hose and appropriate hydraulic fluid.

BUT if you have NOT found that TELL-TALE hydraulic fluid... you had better have an ASSISTANT operate the clutch pedal while you determine were that MALFUNCTION is located.

If the pedal is working the clutch lever on the transmission... you are looking at a SERIOUS clutch rebuild.

ALWAYS REMEMBER to work on level ground, chock your wheels and use good jack stands... like your life depends on it... before getting under ANY CAR... It does!

2001 mercury cougar, master cylinder ran dry because slave cylinder below is leaking at the firewall. I filled the master cylinder and tried bleeding the clutch at the transmission until fluid stream...


No, you don't need to replace the clutch itself.
Don't be surprised if the slave cylinder replacement doesn't fix it.
Could be the master cylinder.

How do you replace the slave cylinder


Step 1
Raise the vehicle and support with jack stand placed underneath the frame.
  • Step 2 Remove the cover from the reservoir on top of the clutch master cylinder. It will be located in the engine bay on the driver side of the firewall, near the brake master cylinder. Fill the reservoir with DOT 3 brake fluid. Do not allow the reservoir to run dry at any time during the bleeding process.
  • Step 3 Locate the clutch slave cylinder. It will be bolted to the clutch housing. Locate the small bleeder screw near where the hydraulic hose connects to the slave cylinder.
  • Step 4 Connect a length of clear plastic tube to the bleeder screw.
  • Step 5 Open the slave cylinder bleeder screw, by turning it counterclockwise. Have an assistant pump the clutch pedal until clean brake fluid seeps out of the bleeder screw. Then close the bleeder screw. Make sure the clutch master cylinder does not run dry.
  • Step 6 Have the assistant pump the clutch pedal a few times and hold it against the floor. While the pedal is held against the floor, open the bleeder screw and allow the some fluid to seep out. Close the bleeder screw before releasing the clutch pedal.
  • Step 7 Repeat the process listed in the step above and watch the fluid seeping out of the slave cylinder. The clutch is fully bled when there are no more air bubbles in the fluid seeping out of the slave cylinder. You will be able to see the bubbles in the clear plastic tubing. Do not allow the clutch master cylinder to run dry at any point.
  • Step 8 Lower the vehicle.

    Your clutch hydraulic system is compromised. Look under the dash, where the clutch pedal has a rod going thru the firewall. If it is damp with oily fluid, your clutch Master Cylinder is leaking. Also, on the side of the transaxle, there is another cylinder, the clutch Slave Cylinder. It can be leaking, also. In any case, with a condition such as yours, I would recommend that you replace both the clutch master and slave cylinders. Over time, they can wear ionterally, and no develop the proper flui pressure to release the clutch.

    Clutch pedal won't come back after fully engaged


    You will need to rebuild or replace both the master & slave cylinders. Then bleed like a brake system.

    86 isuzu clutch- master cylinder ran dry


    Did you bleed the system? There is probably a bleeder on the slave cylinder and you may need to jemmy the selector fork/ Also look fro a damper valve between the master and slave cylinder... it will need bleeding too.
