Question about 1984 Honda CBX

2 Answers

I have purchased the 1984 Honda cbc 750F through ebay. The current engine in the bike has a primary drive tensioner, which is broken. I have sourced a second hand running engine, however don't have a manual as yet. Will it be easy to just swap the engines over. What's involved with this process?

What's involved in swapping the engines over? Does it involve spitting the crank case etc?

  • jason_wri590 Sep 14, 2009

    Thanks for the reply.

Then is it easy to take the engine from the gear box and replace the other engine.

    Thanks Jason.

If you know that the engine is good, then it is better to replace the tensioner.
If you are not sure about engine condition, then replace engine.

to replace the tensioner you will need to take off the
cover. Remove engine sprocket.
Undo the primary chain and clutch assembly alltogether.
Undo the starter bolts and jackshaft.
Replace the tensioner.

The job is pretty much similar to replacing the drive belt.

It is very easy to do this, all you need to do is remove a few long bolts that secure the engine in the bikes frame, disconnect the plug wires from plugs, disconnect the wiring to the alternator stator in the side case and disconnect fuel and carb linkages, u should have it out in about 1 hour.

Hi, Korrie_mccli I would love to help you with your engine or chassis noise but I just loaned my brand new pair of listening ears to your local dealer's chief technician so he could take your bike for a test ride and give you his professional opinion and estimate about your noise and repair cost. If you are a little short on "DRACHMA" and a Dealership is not on your list of fun places to visit then perhaps the list below will help soothe your worried mind so you can make an informed decision.

1984 honda shadow vt700c has no tension in sheifter. it just flops and is stuck into gear

There is a spring ( the right side of the engine under the cover), I think you have to take of the clutch, then shift in gears and you should see a broken spring.

1994 Honda VFR 750F Backfiring Issues (Possible Causes and Solutions)

I would start with synchronizing the carburetors. Could possibly be timing but doubtful with that particular bike. I would go ahead and check the timing chain tension. If they are loose enough the camshafts can jump one link and cause sonar issues, along with power loss.

1985 Honda CBX how to change timing chain tensioner

Hi, R the vast majority of service, parts fiche, and owners manuals on the internet are "FREE" to download and all service manuals contain wiring diagrams in the back pages. The rest usually charge a modest fee of $15 and there is a handful of obscure, rare, obsolete, and very old models that are no longer or never were available and some were never printed in English. The Indian and Philippine markets are usually in E-book format only, for these rare occasions I shall look on eBay and find the cheapest one available. Most of the manuals will cover your exact make, model, and year otherwise one will be provided that comes as close as possible to your bike and will have most of the same info that an exact manual would have. If there is no $ sign after the manual link it is free to download.

Kick start is locked up

Could be cam chain, but more possibly would be related to clutch or primary drive chain to gearbox.

If the engine is seized up, it's probably because it is locked in gear.

The clutch is a relatively easy task on the lovely old CB100s, but if the primary chain to gearbox is broken or jammed, I'm afraid it's a motor-out-and-stripdown job.

Good luck, mate
