Question about 2003 Yamaha YZ 250

1 Answer

'04 YZ250 2 stroke was becoming slower over time

After 6 years of heavy use and even a new top end I just couldn't get up the xmas tree hill climb at 9600ft elevation (see YOU TUBE video level 1,2,3). I bought a new FMF Fatty pipe and now I run with the 450's again!!! Your 2 stroke pipe WILL slowly clog over time. I cut mine apart and had almost 30% reduction in size. The best $219 I have ever spent.

It runs good on flat but wont climb hills

If it is a high mileage engine, it will likely never climb hills again. Greater torque and horsepower are required for hill climbing, and the more worn an engine becomes, the less torque and horsepower will be available.

There is no problem with the revs going to 3 or 6. The revs need to climb so you have enough power to climb the hill (if the car upshifts under heavy load it may stall). But are you saying that the only way you can get it to shift out of first is to turn off the car? if so, then that is obviously not supposed to happen. It should shift shortly after you start driving down hill.

well there are a couple of things that can cause this to happen. first check your oil and coolent. odd sounding i know but this can cause it. second check and make sure your cluchs are working correctly. next if all that fails then i would check the air intake for blockages and then service the carb.

To me it sounds like the hydro unit has developed internal leaks and the pressure lowers as the oil thins from heat. These trans axles are usually replaced as an unit but some can actually be repaired.call the dealer to see if you can get parts or whether you need to replace the whole thing.I assume you have already tried a new drive belt, tensioner ect. and if so you are down to the trans axle. You may buy some time buy getting rid of the low viscosity oil in the rear end and go to regular hydraulic oil.

Did you replace BOTH of the ground drive belts?
The deck belt has absolutely nothing to do with the pulling power of the tractor.
The 600 series MTDs have a single speed transaxle with a variable speed selector to give you the different speed ranges and requires 2 belts, one from the engine (the top half of the pulley) to the variable speed mechanism and one from the variable speed to the transaxle if one or both of the belts is worn, it will cause a loss of power to the ground

Sharping Ice Climbing Tools

Step1 Use a 10-inch Mill Bastard file, although you can get by with a shorter version. Put your ice climbing tools in a vise while sharpening to make the process easier. Step2 Stroke the file away from you. If you draw the file back toward you, it becomes dulled and less useful. Make your sharpening strokes smooth and even. Step3 Work on honing the flat surfaces into sharp points. Follow the existing points, and do not try to change their direction. Step4 Sharpen from the front of the tool to the back. This helps to maintain the points. Step5 Buy replacement points for your crampons. Filing eventually will wear down your ice climbing gear. Replacing the points will ensure you'll be able to dig into the ice and rock surfaces.
