wots the colour of the plug after its had a good run? is the exhaust gasket on the head leaking as this can cause this ? have you coated the air filter with a film of oil as this is required and also stops dirt passing through it ? correct spark plug and gap ? timing set correctly ?

Backfire on deacceleration

Get the fueling set up on a rolling road. Honda set the fuelling to suit the Emissions and the Exhaust they fitted. An after market exhaust will usually have less backpressure and need a set up. When you say backfire, do you mean a great big bang or just a little popping sound from the exhaust? If it is the latter, it isn't a massive problem but a set up will cure it. A Big Bang could be a cause for concern as it means the ignition is taking place when the Exhaust valve is open and firing in the exhaust itself. This will give a drop in performance and may cause the engine and exhaust to fail.

2002 honda vt 750 shadow spirit one cylinder won't fire what's the problems

Pull the plug out and test it on the frame. If no spark you need new plugs. If it does spark look at the plug. If the plug is black and wet it is getting to much fuel and flooding. You will need to adjust your carb's air to gas mixture.

I have a 2000 shadow spirt. It starts and runs great with the following exception. While driving 50-55 mph in 5th gear, the engine will chug or chatter when I accelerate easily. If I accelerate hard, it...

Sounds like you have a flat spot in the powerband. The "chatter" could be from detonation, or more commonly known as a "spark knock" and is usually derived from an external cause such as carbon deposits or poor fuel...A small vacuum leak will also cause it and you will hear a "popping" out the exhaust on deacceleration as unmetered air is sucked in. The timing being off just a few degrees will cause it also. Did the honda dealer sync your carbs? This is important for the absolute best performance. Troubleshoot these few areas and see what you find. The "chatter" is not good, and if left unattended it could lead to more serious damage. I hope this helps and good luck with your bike.

1983 vt 500 honda shadow. Replaced both head's. Starts fine has good power. Yet it pop's or back fires some times after giving it progressive fuel. What do you think. Thank you!

Three things that can cause popping or backfiring. 1)You may have cracked, leaking,or broken intake manifolds or bad o-rings on the manifolds. 2)Leaking exhaust gaskets in the head or between the head pipe and muffler. 3)Bad spark plug caps and partially fouled plugs. Check it out.

Back fires 24/7?????????????????

Backfiring can be caused by fouled spark plugs (you have four, two per cylinder), bad spark plug caps, bad air cut valves on the side of the carburetors, but most likely leaking exhaust gaskets. I am guessing that you have changed the exhaust system but did not put new crush o-rings between the cylinder head and the head pipe. You should also change the tubular gasket/seals between the head pipes and the mufflers. If this does not fix the problem , take out the two screws that hold the air cut diaphragms in place and remove the covers . If the rubber diaphragms have holes in them or have become sticky they need to be replaced. Air cut diaphragms turn off the fuel during deceleration to prevent back firing. If they go bad they can cause poor running , popping , and back firing during normal operation.

With bike warm and choke off my 2002 crf450 pops on deacceleration. reves and runs exellent only on de aceeleration will it pop.

Popping during deceleration is unburned fuel igniting in the exhaust system. Four stroke dirt bikes are highly prone to this. However, you should be able to minimize the popping by restricting the air leaking into the exhaust. Replace the exhaust gasket in the head between the head and head pipe and the head pipe to the muffler. If there is no gasket between headpipe and muffler you may be able to improvise with a strip of fiberglass cloth
