Question about 1999 Suzuki GSX 600 F (Katana)

99 GSX600F idles badly, belches smoke

1999 GSX 600F runs badly.

When I first got it, it sounded like it was almost missing on one cylinder when idling, but was ok in the higher revs. As time went on it started being more of a problem, with the bike arbitrarily pulling then decelerating while riding. Also, on occasion, would produce clouds of smoke when started.

Dealer cleaned and balanced the carbs, and replaced the fuel valve and oil sump pan (to fix leaks). Total cost: Over £600. The bike was BETTER, but by no means fixed.

Now it's starting its antics once again. Last week it had no power at all while I was riding it, it sounded like it was only firing on 3 cylinders, and backfired while I was pulling away from the lights. It still eats oil and still occasionally produces clouds of smoke when starting. Could oil be leaking into a cylinder somehow?

Scared to take it back to the dealership, as £600 to not fix a problem is not very appealing. Any ideas?

I think your right!! take your drain plug off and drain some oil out....look at it condition does it have small bubbles in it does it smell funny or look like a milk shake?
if it does you probably have a cracked cylinder wall.

1991 Ford Aerostar runs fine when cold then starts missing when it warms up?

Try spraying carb cleaner around the intake if idle increases it is a bad intake gasket. It also could be a bad plug/s, wires, or low compression in one of the cylinders. At higher idle a slightly lower compression cylinder is not noticeable but after warming up the idle drops causing the cylinder to have a misfire.

The oil pressure is low at idle and rises with higher engine revs. Oil levels are ok, new oil approx 2000kms ago. Was a slight noise at one stage in the engine but went away after engine's revs in

It sounds as if the clearance that the bearings normally run in have been surpassed and need to be replaced. Higher engine revs will supply extra oil which will overcome any small discrepencies but constant running at this stage will result in faster degradation of all engine components concerned resulting in a more expensive repair. Shes basically worn out.

My Virago XV535 was in winter storage and now the front cylinder only fires up on a higher rev than idle. With choke on, it contunues to run, but without it stalls. Back cylinder operates normal....

sounds like a pilot jet problem. Pilot jet runs first 1/4 of throttle opening, main jet the other 3/4. Take out pilot jet (usually the smaller one next to the bigger main jet) and leave it in a cup of neat petrol overnight. By morning it should be ok.

2007 gsxr 600 When idleing it goes on three or two cylinder but if i rev it up it is ok i want to know what is the problem please respond

sounds like a fueling problem, possibly a partially blocked injector, or an air leak, easy way to find an air leak, spray something like easystart around the injectors / inlet and if the revs alter then you have a leak, but otherwise, could be an earth fault to the ecu (computer) causing lost spark whilst idling.
Hope this helps

do a compression test of the cylinders, could be a burnt valve, from what you describe engine is missfiring on idle and running on all cylinders at higher revs

Slight ticking at iddle speed

have you tried adjusting the tickover/idle speed on the carbs. Its should be ticking over at 1000-1200.
