One possibility is the rear axle isn't aligned so the rear wheel/tire runs true to the axis of the frame. This can be visible with the drive belt not running true on it's sprocket, pulling to one side of the pulley, rather than being about equal spacing on each side of the belt to each side of the pulley.
The other possibility is the rear wheel was removed, and the axle spacers weren't reinstalled in the correct position(s).
The axle spacers are different lengths, and are specific as far as which one goes on the left, which one goes on the right.

Fix belt on 1200 sportster 0


I assume you want to know how to replace a final drive belt on a Sporty. First off, be glad you ain't working on a Big Twin. Sportster's are much easier than Big Twins to replace the belt on.

First, get the bike off the ground where you can remove the rear wheel. Then, remove the rear shock on the right side. Remove the bolts from the rear master cylinder and the large nut that holds the right foot peg on. Remove the front pulley cover.

Take the new belt and install it with the right leg of the swing arm through the belt. You may can work the belt over the front drive pulley. If not, use an air wrench to remove the pulley and install the belt. Retorque the pulley to 110-120 foot pounds. Remember the threads on this nut are left handed.

Reinstall the rear wheel and shock absorber. Adjust the belt to the proper tension. Then replace the front pulley cover and rear master cylinder.

Check the rear brakes for proper operation.

Unless someone has changed a spacer or something , the rear wheel should be centered with the frame, not necessarily the swingarm. The rear brake caliper bracket acts as the spacer on the right side and there is a spacer on the left side. This spacer on the left side should be just short enough to get into the swingarm without a lot of excess space once installed. You should not be squeezing your swingarm more than 0.125 inch or so.

Now, there are other things that will cause the tire to rub the final drive belt. Too wide tire will do this. The '94 models used the old style wide belts unlike the narrower belt used by the later models. If you install a like is on a later model, it's too wide and will probably rub. The next reason for tire belt interference is the rear tire not being adjusted correctly and it is not under the bike straight. Adjust the rear wheel by measuring the length of the adjuster bolt relative to the axle. These measurements should be the same on both sides of the swingarm. If you can't do that, find something about six feet long that you can use as a straight edge to check the alignment of the rear wheel to the front wheel. Keep in mind that there is an offset designed into the front wheel. Just make sure that the rear wheel is as straight relative to the frame as you can get it.

Even with all this stuff correctly set, the final drive belt will be close to the side of the tire but it should not rub.

When i turn sharp while reversing (out of the drive way) the front end makes a very loud noise, sort of like a rubbing or something grabbing. Also when in 4 HI or 4 Low i can bearly ever turn without the...


if you are turing sharp, your tires may be rubbing. a way to check is turn your tires all the way to one side and look under on both sides and then turn them the other way and do the same thing. while you are looking under the vehicle look for any shiny polished metal. this will be a sign that your tire are rubbing.

As far as your problems with 4hi and 4low, if it happens on dry pavement, that is actually normal. your four wheel drive system is set up to engage to assist with traction. your tire while doing so will be rotating at different speeds as needed to ensure proper traction is achieved.

Down and dirty way - take it to the dealer and have them install a new tire....

The hard way: place bike on bike jack and remove rear wheel by removing the axle nut and drifting the axle out of the wheel. Derail the belt/chain and drop the wheel out of the brake caliper. Remove valve stem to deflate the tire. Get a set of tire spoons and a 12 pack of COLD brew cause working with tire spoons is no FUN! Pry the bead loose with one spoon and the work your way around the wheel prying the tire beed to the outside of the wheel. Repeat this process for the back side of the tire (in the same direction as the first side so the tire will come off the wheel. Reverse and repeat to install new tire.

By now you will be loading your wheel into the truck and heading to the HD shop. It just really isn't worth the hastle to save the $25 or so to have this job done.

Align wheel with new tire on it with the brake caliper so that you have one shoe on each side of the rotor (you may have to actually remove the caliper if your pads are thick. Install your belt drive/chain drive and then lift the wheel to insert the axle through the swing arm, the chain tensioner and wheel. Reverse
on the other side. Place axle nut on axle and torque to about 80lbs.

Good to go.

This is not normal under no circumstance should your drive belt rub!! If you didn't take it to a dealer do so, if you did see the service manager or owner!

93 FXR Rear tire rubs belt guard w/axle centered.


Try just bending the belt guard or removing it and fileing some material off the guard so it does not rub. You may also be able to remedy this by adding washers to the belt guard attach points.

Adjusting rear tire


is it rubbing all the time when you spin the wheel or is it as if the wheel is buckled? or could it be bearings in your wheel. (any side to side movement in it) if not then gotta be tire not seated correctly, you will see this though if you examine it along the rim on both sides, OR the shop put a tire on that was too wide, with either of these tire problems i suggest you go back to the shop that installed it, to re seat it you will have to remove the wheel and deflate tire fully, break the bead seal against the rim. then re-inflate carefully to seal it against the rim, give it a few bounses to help saeting correctly.
