I do not understand the hit the horn to start up, that sounds like wires are grounded, shorted, or mixed up...Isn't the starter button on the right hand control? First thing that I would do would be to pull the hand levers loose and see if something in there is worn through or damaged or loose... Mike

Sounds like a ground problem. make a jumper wire and hook one end to the ng side of bat. the other to a good metal prt of engine. if this cures the prob start chasing down your ground wire making sure all connectsions are clean and tight

Why would my horn and break light stop working on my 2006 Harley Davidson sportster 1200 xl custom at the same time. Swapped batteries blew a main oem 30 amp swap all works except horn and break lite

Hi Anonymous, check your horn button for continuity, always check fuses and bulbs first for broken filaments. Then check the connection at the rear fender wiring harness, inspect for corroded, broken or loose pins. Use a dab of dielectric grease and repair as necessary. Check your brake relay if you have one , check your brake light switches for continuity, some models rear turn signals were single filament bulbs only, no running light. If all else fails get out your test light and start tracking the power wire from the harness connection. My 1980 sportster back fires when started but after its running its OK.This just started what could cause this. Thanks JL

By the term "backfire",are you referring to the engine spitting back through the carburetor or popping through the exhaust system? You also didn't tell me what type of carburetor the bike is equipped with. A lot of the owners of early Sportsters didn't like the original carbs and replaced them with aftermarket carbs. Since the carburetors use different starting circuit designs, it makes a difference in how the engine is started. It really makes no difference and I've heard many bikes that do either or both of these things when starting. What does make a difference is how easily it startes and how it runs AFTER it starts. If it's simply a spit or a pop, this is not unusual. Does the bike run the way it's supposed to? If not, that's what we need to look at.

Good Luck
Steve

Speedo, turn signals, brake lights, horn stopped working. All else is fine.

Gap your plugs to 38 thou. Check all your bulbs (one burned out will affect the rest) Take a look at all your fuses and make sure they are all ok. Otherwise you are probably looking at a wiring short which will require trouble shooting of the elctrical system. Buy your self a service manual for your bike, this will help you a lot.
