You have a bent shift fork (or two). The bend in the fork will not move the slider gear properly and causes the lockup. Expensive to fix. The engine gets a complete tear-down in order to get to the gears and shift forks.

Yamaha XJ600 -84. Have problem when shifting gears both up and down. the gear lever is very hard to move. Engine has run 31500 km and everything else works fine except this.

The problem is bent shift forks. They will soon get to where you can't shift at all. This is an expensive repair. Parts can be hard to come by on a bike as old as yours. The motor comes out of the bike then turned upside down for removal of the bottom case. The clutch, shift shaft, flywheel, electrics, gears and gear shafts gotta come out so you can get to the bad fork. There's much more but the idea is that you are better off having the shop do the repair unless you have experience, are extremely mechanically inclined, and have the tools. The bad news is that a shop is going to charge around $1500 for the repair. Some shop mechanics also repair bikes at home. If you find one, you can save $400 or so. Please rate my answer.
