Question about 2004 kawasaki ZX-10R

1 Answer

Just purchased a 2004 zx10r with 53,000 kms and it came with a noisy engine, I think it's a top end noise of some kind. It only starts at 4 to 5000rpm, rattly noise and vibration. Under 4-5000rpm the engine revs freely. This is only my second bike and not really sure how to start fixing the problem. Could a cam chain problem cause vibration as well? Help! thanks.

Oil is Silkoline 10w-40, I would rather fix the problem outright.

It is coming into summer now though! LOL

I am getting massive power and no real dips in the revs but it's just to noisy above 4000rpm. Fixed it by wearing ear plugs! hehe but I can still feel it.

I was worried about the vibration as I can't see how a worn chain can cause the vibration, any thoughts?

I just want to understand how could a worn timing chain cause vibration? Thoughts anyone! thanks!

Hi Robert, Yes I'm in Sydney!

Wanna come down and give us a hand with the chain?! hehe

Yes the noise is there when stationary (no load) thats why I thought cam chain or tensioner but was puzzled with the vibration.

At this stage I will just pull the cam cover off and have a look see as I am sure you need to split the case to do bottom end stuff, maybe depends on the day!

Yes it would if the chain is worn. what grade oil is in the bike and despite the noise are you able to get the rev's up and good power.

often just a heavier grade oil will work although you don't want to do that in a colder climate

a worn chain spinning at 5,000 RPM you would notice. best to take it apart at least the top end to see what is worn or loose.

i'm guessing you are in australia... i'm in brisbane for another couple months.

it's a bit of a job but if you are up to it new bearings and checking for wear on the bottom end may be in order. something just occured to me. is that noise present when you aren't moving and you rev it up abit. basically no load on the motor.

put a small amount of pressure on the clutch when it vibrates and see if that stops it

Loud chatter on start and rattle from timing chain area

The timing chain area also takes in the alternator and water pump. To isolate the source of the noise, use the old mechanics trick.

Place a 3 foot 1/4 inch brass rod against the flap at the opening of your ear and push until it closes. Place the other end of the rod against various engine components and listen. The noisy problem will conduct the noise up the rod to your ear and you can hear quite precisely where the problem is. Much safer than laying your ear all over a running engine.

You can also loosen the fan belt and run the engine without alternator or water pump (briefly) to see how that affects the problem. Chatter on start makes me think of starter and Bendix gear problems. Sounds like a 2 person diagnostic team to me; one to start the car and one to listen and probe.

Don't know if Subaru Forrester has an engine that has valve interference at piston Top Dead Center. If it is and the timing chain breaks, you are looking at major $$ to recover.

You probably need to adjust your valve lash. This is part of the routine service on a Virago.
.004" intake and .006" exhaust is the specs on a COLD engine.

Good luck, i hope this helps.

I have a 2001 model honda 100cc motorcycle. My problem is that the engine is somehow noisy maybe because of 8~9 years running. What do I need to do to solve it, do I need engine overhauling?

The bad thing about the internet is that I can't actually hear the noise to identify what it may be. Is it gearbox noise or top end noise? If it is top end, a knocking noise would probably be piston slap. Valves needing adjusting can be noisy also. A worn cam chain can be noisy. It would be a good thing to just ride over to a dealer and let them listen to it in an effort to identify what service may be needed.. No cost in doing that. In all likelihood, the valves should be re-seated and a new set of piston rings installed along with running a hone through the cylinder. This means removing the cylinder head and cylinder.

2007 FLHTCU Transmission Noisy 5th gear

Wow, valves and other related engine noises don't care what gear you are in, they still make the noise. However your motor may be "lugging" in 5th gear which can cause a symptom of an engine related issue.
You may have an issue with the actual gearbox its self.
There is a primary drive chain that may be worn which will cause excessive noise in top gear because it is putting the greatest load on the engine. This is what connects the engine to the transmission. I think there is a tensioner for your model that will allow you to adjust the free play in the primary drive chain. If not I strongly recommend replacement because this will cause major damage if it breaks.
