I think it's an interference engine but you can check quite easily at this point if the valves are bent. Pull all the spark plugs out, turn the crank so that all the pistons are 1/2 way down their bore, get a piece of fuel line that is just the right size to thread into the plug holes or a special fitting for this purpose, and blow into each cylinder after you have turned the cams in succession so that the valves should be closed at the hole you are blowing into. If a valve is bent, you won't have any trouble blowing into the cylinder. If it's good, you won't be able to blow very well at all.

the timing chains have to come off , they hold the cams down in the head bearings , so yes id say u have to remove chain cover off to be able to remove the cams !!

(and yes I know theres a bolt on ends of cams )

How to replace head gasket


Hello and welcome to Fixya, First remove tank, remove spark plug cap and plug. Take the tappet covers off ( valve adjuster caps). Then remove the round timing covers on the side of the engine. Rotate the engine either by the kickstart, but recommend using a socket wrench on the flywheel. Rotate until you start to see the intake valves start to go down, as soon as they start coming back up. Use a flash light and continue to rotate slowly until you see a T mark, line it up with the case cover mark. Now you are on Top Dead Center. Remove all your valve cover bolts in a criss cross pattern a little at a time. Remove cover. Now on the rear side of the cylinder/head area there will be a cam chain tensioner, remove it. Now you can remove the cam sprocket, make sure to use a piece of wire or anything to tie up your cam chain to prevent it from falling down into motor or coming off lower gear, just make sure there's good tension on it when you tie it up, tie it up to the handlebar. Remove camshaft. Next remove your exhaust pipe, now remove all the fasteners holding your head down. Next remove your wire tied up at handlebar holding cam-chain, and slowly remove your head. Clean any carbon buildup, inspect cylinder for any abnormal wear (deep scratches ect..) Remove old gasket and clean both surfaces. Now as long as everything looks good just follow in reverse order, make sure when you install camshaft the lobes are facing down, and your camshaft gear marks are lined up with head and your still on the T mark. Check this a few times to make sure the engine didn't move some, if it does just put it back on the T mark. Once you get head, and valve cover back on check your valves to make sure there adjusted to spec. Also make sure you replace your exhaust gasket as well.   1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2. Drain cooling system.
  3. Remove the upper front fender apron insulator.
  4. Remove the upper radiator support insulator.
  5. Remove the right front wheel and tire assembly.
  6. Remove the right lower splash shield.
  7. Remove the drive belt and alternator.
  8. Remove the air switching valve (XRS)
  9. Remove the power steering oil pressure switch connector.
  10. Remove the 2 power steering mounting nuts and through bolts. Remove the steering pump from the engine. Secure the steering pump to the cowl toy_car_15_wood_block_on_jack.gif

  13. Remove the 2 nuts, 2 clips and the cylinder head shield (except XRS).
  14. Remove the 4 ignition coils.
  15. Remove the 2 ventilation hoses from the cylinder head valve cover.
  16. Remove the 9 bolts, 2 seal washers, 2 nuts, cylinder head cover and gasket (except XRS). XRS toy_car_18_eng_cylndr_hd_cvr_blts_2zz-g.gif

  17. Remove the 4 bolts and the cylinder head shield (XRS).
  18. Remove the 2 nuts, bolt and remove the ventilation hose from the ventilation pipe (XRS). XRS toy_car_18_eng_cylndr_hd_cvr_ventl_hs-pp.gif

  19. Remove the Ventilation pipe and gasket (XRS).
  20. Remove the 9 bolts, wire harness protector. Remove the cylinder head cover and gasket (XRS).
  21. Remove the O-ring from the cylinder head cover (XRS)
  22. Turn the crankshaft pulley and align its groove with timing mark "0" on the timing chain cover. toy_car_18_eng_tmng_mark.gif

  23. Ensure that the marks on the camshaft timing sprockets are in straight line on the timing chain cover surface as shown. toy_car_18_eng_tmng_point_marks.gif

  24. If not turn the crankshaft 1 revolution (360°) and align the marks as above.

  26. Remove the 2 mounting bolts and remove the crankshaft position sensor.
  27. Remove the mounting bolt, nut and the drive belt tensioner.
  28. Remove the right engine mount bracket.
  29. Remove the front exhaust pipe (XRS).
  30. Remove the Exhaust manifold brace (XRS).

  32. Remove the 2 mounting nuts and remove the chain tensioner.
  33. Remove the water pump. Except XRS toy_car_18_eng_tmng_chn_cvr_blts_1zz-fe.gif

  34. Remove the 11 mounting bolts and nut (except XRS).
  35. Remove the 12 bolts (XRS).
  36. Remove the stud bolt.
  37. Remove the timing chain cover and 2 gaskets.
  38. Remove the crank sensor plate.
  39. Remove the timing chain tensioner slipper mounting bolt. Remove the tensioner slipper. toy_car_18_eng_tmng_chn_sprkt.gif

    Note: If the crankshaft timing sprocket cannot be removed by hand, use 2 screwdrivers. Position shop rags as shown to prevent damage.
  40. Remove the timing chain and crankshaft timing sprocket.
  41. Remove the 2 chain vibration damper mounting bolts. Remove the vibration damper toy_car_18_eng_tmng_cntrl_assy.gif

  42. Hold the camshaft hexagonal section with a wrench. Remove the sprocket mounting bolt.
  43. Remove the valve timing controller assembly and timing sprocket.
Note: Be careful not to damage the cylinder head and valve lifter with the wrench.
Do not disassemble the valve timing controller assembly.

Head gasket got bent and I have replaced it . Now the problem I'm facing is how to set the crank shaft and the comshaft timing. I need the procedure for engine timing


Timing Chain & Gears Removal & Installation To Remove:
NOTE: Keep the cam chain away from magnetic fields.
Crankshaft set at TDC marks hnda_trk_crv_crank_tdc_marks.gif

  1. Turn the crankshaft pulley so its Top Dead Center (TDC) mark (1) lines up with the pointer (2).
  2. Raise and support the vehicle.
  3. Remove the front tires/wheels. Front undercar splash shield hnda_trk_crv_frt_under_splsh_shld.gif

  4. Remove the front undercar splash shield.
  5. Remove the drive belt.
  6. Remove the cylinder head cover (See section on Valve Cover).
  7. Remove the crankshaft pulley (See section on Crankshaft Damper). CKP sensor and VTC solenoid electrical connectors hnda_trk_crv_ckp_vtc_ele_conn.gif

  8. Disconnect the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor connector (1) and Variable Valve Timing Control (VTC) oil control solenoid valve connector (2).
  9. Remove the VTC oil control solenoid valve (See section on VTC Solenoid Valve).
  10. Support the engine with a jack and wood block under the oil pan. Ground cable and upper bracket removal hnda_trk_crv_grnd_cbl_uppr_brckt_rem.gif

  11. Remove the ground cable (1), and remove the upper bracket (2). Side engine mount bracket removal hnda_trk_crv_side_eng_mount_brckt_rem.gif

  12. Remove the side engine mount bracket. Timing chain cover removal hnda_trk_crv_timng_chain_cov_rem.gif

  13. Remove the timing chain cover bolts both from the front to the block and from the bottom to the oil pan.
  14. Remove the timing chain cover.
  15. Loosely install the crankshaft pulley. Compress the timing chain auto-tensioner hnda_trk_crv_compr_tim_chain_auto_tensnr.gif

  16. Turn the crankshaft counterclockwise to compress the auto-tensioner. Lock the timing chain auto-tensioner hnda_trk_crv_lock_tim_chain_auto_tensnr.gif

  17. Align the holes on the lock (1) and the auto tensioner (2), and then insert a 0.06 inch (1.5 mm) diameter pin (3) into the holes.
  18. Turn the crankshaft clockwise to secure the pin. Removal of the timing chain auto-tensioner hnda_trk_crv_rem_tim_chain_auto_tensnr.gif

  19. Remove the auto-tensioner. Removal of the timing chain guide B hnda_trk_crv_rem_tim_chain_guide.gif

  21. Remove the cam chain guide A (1) and tensioner arm (2).

How do i take the heads off of the motor and whats the specks to put a new one back on


I don't recommend that unless you have a full set of tools and a lot pf patience and organizational skills. But here goes. Remove the coolant, drain the oil, disconnect the battery cable. remove the spark plug wires. Remove all cables and wires going to the intake. Remove the air cleaner and hoses connected to it. Remove all heater hoses and raciator hoses. Remove all the vacuum lines, remove the fuel lines,caution they are pressurized and may spray gas into the engine compartment. Remove the serpintene belt and alternator, air pump, and ac compressor. Remove timeing chain cover. Remove timing chain. Note where the timing marks are on the crankshaft and on the cam or cams if you have more than one cam. Remove the intake manifold, remove valve covers. If you have have push rods for the valves remove them. You will have to back off the pressure on the valve lifters to remove most of them. Remove the head bolts and lift the head free of the engine. Keep everything in perfect order. The water pump and timing chain often uses different length bolts that must be put back in the same holes. Also the push rods are supposed to be put back in the exact order as some may have worn more than others. To reinstall just clean all gasket surfaces on the head, engine block, intake and exhaust manifolds, valve covers, timing chain cover, thermostat cover, etc. I would go ahead and replace the timing belt or chain, depending on which engine you have. I would also go ahead and replace the spark plugs and wires too. Once everything is cleaned up, just reverse the order

If you need to remove the cylinder head, here's how. To remove the cam chain, you've got to also remove the left crankcase cover and flywheel.

First, you need to turn the engine over until the piston is at top dead center (TDC) of the compression stroke. Begin by removing the two round covers from the left side of the crankcase cover. Also remove the four tappet hole covers from the cylinder head cover. Turn the engine (in the normal direction of rotation) and watch the intake valves open - and close, then see that the exhaust valves open, then close. Now align the 'T' on the flywheel with the notch in the inspection hole. With all of the valves closed, the engine is at TDC of the compression stroke. Do not begin removal of the cylinder head cover until this is done - to avoid damage to the cover.

With the cylinder head cover removed, you will find two bolts attaching the cam chain sprocket to the camshaft. Turn the engine until you can get a 10mm socet onto the heads of the bolts and remove them. The sprocket will come loose and slide down onto the camshaft, enabling you to remove it an the camshaft.

Upon reassembly, set the cam timing by first setting the engine at TDC. Then, align the two marks on the cam sprocket with the gasket surface on the cylinder head. With the engine at TDC and the marks lined up, the cam timing is properly set.

you have to take the top part of the motor off to get to the head gasket. all the way down to the heads.
