2006 Honda VTX1300S/R Cutting out, choking, dying totally

Problem: Cutting out, choking, dying totally, won't start posted by wonderingjea on 08/09/2009

I have a 2006 Honda VTX1300s/r 65,000 km's. Just got home from an 8 day trip of hell riding in the USA. Two tow truck rides on different days, 1 day in the Honda Dealership stateside. Costly! Bike started choking out like had to switch to reserve, backfired a few times, then choked out continuously till died on the I90. Wouldn't start for love nor money. Removed petcock several times at many different locations. At first gas wasn't running, thought it was a plugged screen, once taken out thought there would be no more problems. Not cured! Problem continued day after day while we were on our holiday. Petcock off more times than can count. Finally second tow to the Honda dealership. They said it was the small screen to the intake on the carb. Was filmed up like something had varnished it creating a solid flap. They cleaned it and said there should be no more problems. Rode next day from Butte Montana to 14 miles south of Shelby Montana (approx. 180 miles) & all of a sudden starting bucking violently, cutting out, choking but never died totally for 13.5 miles. Once she died & I was coasting downhill, I managed to get her started again while still rolling downhill, she sounded perfectly normal in first & second. Let her sit at the motel overnight. Headed for home yesterday in Canada. It backfired once time only after being started up for about 5 minutes at the first when we were pulling away from the motel. Every couple of hours we would stop to let her cool down as everytime this happened it was warm weather & the bike got extremely hot coming off the motor on the left side against my leg. We made it home all the way without her shutting down. It did hesitate a couple of times but never choked. Also, we noticed that it would be around the 140 km mark after fueling. I generally get 250 km on my tank before I have to switch to reserve. Hubby just removed that little filter on the carb intake & it was partially covered in the varnished flap again. Hubby thinks it could be the coil? What is your opinion?

Have been told by many experts that all of these conditions together do not match wiring problems, coils, stater or starter.

We took the fuel tank off, dumped all the fuel, put in 1 gallon (4 litres) of fresh fuel, rinsed it around, dumped the fuel again, put in fresh fuel and dumped again (we did this 3 times). Cleaned all hoses & parts from fuel tank to the carb. Cleaned every nook & cranny on the carb. Cleaned the little cone shaped filter to the carb intake again to make sure it was clean. Reassembled and rode long day rides for two weekends in a row & during the week around town. So far, she sounds normal, lots of power & no more choking out. Don’t know for sure if this is the cure but for now she’s running fine. Going on a long trip this weekend for 6 or 7 days again, so we’ll see.

Thank you for your comments vtaylor 2. We just came back from our short 2174 km holiday & she ran just fine. Never hesitated, never choked out, ran like a charm after we did the rinsing of the gas tank & cleaning all to the carbs AND the carbs inside & out. Yesterday, took that little filter back out that is to the carb intake just to see if there was anymore varnish after our trip. No Varnish BUT there was a bug in the filter that we had seen fly into the tank at one point when fueling up. Anyway, seems to have done the trick with all the cleaning we did. Thank you very much though, will defintely remember the Seafoam if I encounter this problem with her again. Riding HAPPILY AGAIN!

Try Seafoam you find it at local autostores..dump about a third in the tank and get it going ..it run like **** and possibly smell a little ande a little smoke might come out but after fifteen miles it should do the trick and clean out the vanish.

If it is not the coil, make sure your negative ground on the battery is screwed down tight. I use a product called "seafoam" to clean my fuel system, plus it also removes carbon from the head of the pistons.
Hope this helps.

2006 Honda 750cc Shadow Aero starts with choke, runs for a minute, sputters and stalls. Won't start again for a couple of days, then starts right up. Electrical?

Hi there
I once had a wee car, whenever it got too much petrol inside itself it refused to go anywhere and had to rest for some time and you had to be very careful with the choke and the petrol so it did not swallow too much of it and need another rest.

Hi, I'm having trouble finding the coolant drain plug on 2006 Honda vtx1300c.

I do not believe your machine has a drain bolt for the coolant system. Usually it is found at the lowest point of the system. It should be a bolt with a sealing washer located on the water pump, but in you case a lower point in the system is the lower front radiator hose. I would unbolt the hose clamp on the front of the metal tube coming off the water pump being careful not to disturb or unbolt the metal tube (it is sealed to the water pump with an o-ring and you do not want it to develop a leak). by removing the rubber lower radiator tube at one end you should be able to completely drain the system.Part #19.

My 2006 Honda VTX1300 starts fine with the choke lever pulled out part or all of the way, but after engine is plenty warmed up, if the choke lever is pushed back in, the bike immediately dies.

your carbs not getting enough fuel check the bowl and jets. I run a pice of wire down the jets even if they look open just to be sure. Speaker wire strands work well for the tiny holes

2002 Honda VT 1100 C2 Shadow Sabre will not idle without the choke being on

Hi, Esw2035 and the usual suspects are:
1. Fuel cap or fuel tank is not venting properly.
2. Fuel filter clogged.
3. Fuel line pinched or kinked.
4. Vacuum line from the petcock to intake manifold cracked.
5. Float needle and seat sticking.
6. Float level too low.
7. Carburetor bowl vent line clogged/blocked/pinched.
8. Idle adjusting screw set too low.
9. Air/fuel mixture screw set too lean.
10. Idle port, transfer ports, slow air jet clogged.
11. Slow fuel jet clogged.
12. Faulty fuel pump.
