This bike has an electrical starter. A few explanations could cause such behavior

  1. Current is reaching the starter. Check the gear pinion which is rotated by the starter. Normally the starters gears are sturdy but yours might have worn down so much that its skipping and thus not engaging the engine to turn the cam so the engine is unable to turn over. Also the timing must not be synchronized...................sodeep

When testing starter out of truck works fine, put starter in truck and under load starter stays engaged, rip

Either the solenoid is getting power when it should not be, or the starter drive is not aligned with the flywheel.

Starter not engaging

The starter solenoid mounted on top of the starter has two functions, as the key is operated the solenoid slides the starter pinion to engage the flywheel, THEN operates heavy duty contacts to power the motor. The solenoid is not engaging the pinion.1726daf9-e191-4168-8e99-cab63cae5995.gif

What ever it is it sounds like the starter Bendix isn't engaging. Need to know if it is engaged by a solenoid or centrifugally engaged.

2003 dyna starter turns but wont engage, new battery fitted

Hi Anonymous, lift up rubber boot on positive cable to starter, unplug starter relay wire usually green, with a jumper wire connected to positive battery cable starter stud, touch blade connecter on starter where starter relay wire was removed. If starter engages and turns over engine then your starter relay is bad. If starter activates but does not engage then your starter drive/clutch is bad. Good luck

Put in new starter it just spins doesnt engage motor

The starter engages with the starter clutch, normaly when the starter spins and doesnt engage, it is because the clutch bearings within the clutch have worn the machined surfaces causing the clutch to stick and not engage when the starter is pressed

03 Oldsmobile Silhouette 3.4L Starter stays engaged at times.

Sounds like time for a new starter. While it could be electrical, in that the starter circuit is remaining engaged, more than likely it is mechanical. As the starter wears, you get play in the starter gear. Replacing the starter should take care of it. If you have recently had the starter off or replaced it, it could be misaligned, causing a similar problem.

Starter does not engage. I replaced the battery

You can remove the starter and bench test it on a vise. You will need your battery or a charger to test the starter with. The trick to do it is simple. The grond is the vise and the positive is the battery cable lug to the starter. Have a small wire to jump the positive and simply touch the solenoid connector to see if the starter engages

97 fatboy starter engages but will not stay engaged.

I would check the starter clutch its self first. It is a one way clutch so if you remove the starter and disassemble it to the starter clutch and hold the starter clutch in one hand and use your other hand to turn the starter clutch gear, it should only turn in one direction.
