I recently bought a Yamaha XJ 600 -84 non-runner. The electrical system is a corroded mess. The bike was supposedly running a few years back... When I tried to measure the ignition coils, I get no contact, on either of them (2), from the HT end to any of the low voltage connections. I have never before come across a bike with both ignition coils faulty at the same time, so my question is this; Is there maybe some very high Ohm resistor, or some spark gap on the output (HT) end of the coils that makes it impossible to check the coils this way? Thanx in advance,
You should be able to check for continuity/resistance at the terminals for the coils. If you have no continuity, or very low resistance, you most likely have bad coils. The old Yamahas had very crappy electrical systems. They have a lot of problems with CDI's, coils, and stators/rotors/regulators/rectifiers. You should be able to get continuity through the wires from one end to the other also.

I fitted a new sensor and my bike does not start at all after fitting. Before I fitted the new sensor, I took it to Truimph and they had it on the dianostics and they told me to fit a new sensor. It also had a problem to start with the old sensor.
