Service engine soon light came on after full tune-up

If the service engine soon light is flashing, it means the computer has detected an engine misfire with the potential of catalytic convertor failure. Don't just tune it up. Bring it somewhere they can read the trouble code. Sometimes it will designate which cylinder is having the problem.

run fault codes and check for HO2S and O2 sensors problems . Check fuel pressure and injectors for operation.

If the shop that performed the tune up didn't put the car on diagnostic test equipment - they may not have noticed a problem; as normal engine speeds needed for a tune up are seldom greater than idle.

Sounds to me like you've got a problem with the emissions system - or one of the sensors that provide information to the on board computer. This could be anything from clogged catalytic converter to a failed oxygen sensor.

Generally, you'd see a "Check Engine" or "Service Engine Soon" indication on the dashboard. Check to see if the bulbs work by shutting the car off, then turn the key from off to the start position - slowly. One position should give a "bulb check" - meaning power is applied to the indicator lamps in the dashboard to show you that the bulbs work. Note any that do not come on (you might need to consult your owner manual to learn what & where these lamps are). You should see the Oil, Temperature, Brake , etc. lights come on - along with the "Check Engine" / "Service Engine Soon" light (among others). The "Check Engine" / "Service Engine Soon" lights are usually yellow - while the others are red. If the light does not come on, you may be unaware of a problem because the light doesn't work as expected.

I'd return to the shop that performed the tune up and explain the symptoms and see if they can help. It may very well be something that a tune up can not fix.

Lastly, when you have a problem with the car - you might be better explaining to the service provider what the problem is - and let them figure out the cause; rather than doing the diagnosing yourself and assuming a tune up will fix the problem. When you do that, the provider simply does what you've asked. They know nothing of the problems you're experiencing.

The check engine light in a 95 is only for items that deal with pollution. Usually when the light goes on and then off again, it is an oxygen sensor. Most places like Autozone or Advance will scan it for free, but don't just replace something because it is on the code. For instance the O2 sensor may be sensing a problem due to needing a tune up and replacing 50 of then will not fix it. Clean the intake, check it for tune up items, especially wires, and have some one who knows what they are doing analyze the O2 voltage to see if they are working. Bottom line, what ever it is it usually will not cause it to break down. Even if it is an egr valve and the valve sticks open, it will just run poorly.

Have you had to add oil? The fact that it comes on going up hill would suggest it's the oil level.

If your battery starts turns the engine over, it is doing it's job well. It sounds like your engine computer is not liking the cold engine. If it has been a while since a tune up, it would not hurt to go ahead and do it, but if it runs ok after it warms up, I sould not worry about it a whole lot. When the engine is cold, the egr valve and other things that are made to limit polution tend to stick and give the computer bad readings. A serious tune up may fix it, and I think should, but you MAY still be in the same boat! That does not FIX it for you, but should ease your mind on the light.
