My old battery will no longer hold a charge after I charged it

My battery is 3 years old, and I tried to start my bike but the battery was dead. I have a charger, so I attached the charger to the battery while it was still hooked up to my bike. After a few hours my bike started up perfectly, but now the battery remains charged for only a day or two. Is this an electrical issue, or do I just need a new battery? Thanks
Mike

I have a 1980 Suzuki GS750L. I left the brake light on over night and as a result the battery is dead. I jumped the bike with my car battery. (The car wasn't running) The bike started and I rode it...

Yes, yes, and no, and I don't know. You could have blown a fuse, but it seems it would be showing other symptoms if you did. THe age of the battery is a good indication of condition, over one year old, suspect, over 2 years old, definitely could be in need of replacement. Check the water in the battery and fill it to the level with bottled water, or rain water, no minerals, then get one of those floaty ball testers and check the electrolyte fluid weight, One dead cell, the battery is shot. Could have been not enough time to charge it back it up. A battery charger needs to run all night. So, check it out, hope this helps.

I have a 2000 Yamaha R1. I charged the battery and it held the charge overnight. The next day I rode about 50miles, stoped the bike and the battery was dead again. It my understanding there is no...

1. Depending on what you mean by holding the charge.
2. As far I can tell, your battery have enough power to start the bike once or twice but then the charge is gone meaning the battery still have poer but the cranking power is below the needed amount.
3. Try take the bike to a battery shop, have them check the battery condition and the same time how well your bike recharging system.
4. If your charging system is good then just replace the battery.

Chances are the battery will no longer hold a charge. An internal short could be why. Bike batteries seldom last more than two years. How old is the battery? Jump the battery from your car battery. If the starter works, the battery is bad, not the starter. You DO have water covering the top of the plates in each battery cell don't you? Please rate my answer, thanks.

Changed battery because it ran down last year. Had it on battery charger [Battery Tender] all winter. Will take a jump ,run but won't start again . Something is draining the battery . I checked all...

I think you're trying to breathe life into a dead horse. Take the battery out of the bike and take it to an automotive parts house. Ask them to test the battery. They'll usually do it for no charge.

Whenever a battery goes dead, it damages the battery but building up sulfides in the bottom of the case. Also. a dead battery will freeze forcing the plates on the inside to come into contact with each other. When this happens, the battery is shorted internally. You jump start the bike and the bike will run off the alternator but the battery will not accept a charge. If the battery is over two years old, it probably needs replacing anyway. Motorcycle batteries don't last like car batteries. The vibration is the culprit.

I think my battery is dead. Do I try to charge it

To charge battery, use a trickle charger at 2 amp. Batteries usually only last about 3 years, so if battery is at that age it probably needs replaced. (Replaced my battery with a lawn mower battery that matched the original battery size.) I would try to get a charge on the battery before replacing it. Replacing the battery could be expensive. Battery could also be low on zinc, water, or acid.

The battery charger in the trasfer case is not charging the battery

have you tested the battery to see if its a good one? if its a dud it wont charge up, and whet tests have you done to see if it realy is not charging the battery, the times iv had this,,, its not charging,,, when it was, but the battery was a dud,
however check all the fuses and trips and put an avo meeter set to amps x10 in line with the battery after you have started the charget to see if it realy is not charging up,,, if its not look at the rectifier,,it may have a blown diodes in it

2003 Yamaha 650 Classic No power from the battery or a charger.

At 55 amps you could charge the batteries on the space shuttle. A 2 amp charger is plenty. You cooked the three year old battery so a new one will be needed. Get the new battery then worry about the fuses only if the bike is still dead. The fuses are under the battery side cover if I recall correctly. Look under the seat if not by the battery.
