Humming dispoosal I have a Badger 5 garbage disposal that is stuck and hums. The unit has been cleaned out and the chopper rotates freely with a wrench. I"ve tried the reset button and tried tapping the unit with a rubber mallot. Do you have any suggestions? The unit is about 5 years old.

I think I just replied to this thread, and suggested what you seem to have already done. Sorry to say, but the disposal is a gonner. That means the motor has been seized (like a car that runs out of oil). No bringing it back, but easy to replace and not too costly.

My garbage disposal won't turn on, and i've felt down there and can't feel anything blocking it...what can i do now

Check circuit breaker.
Check red reset button on side of disposal and see if it's popped out. It's under sink, next to wire connection on disposal.
See if electric switch has gone bad. Listen if disposal makes humming sound. Humming means electric power is good.
Use vacuum cleaner hose instead of hand to check for stuff inside disposal
Use wood broomstick and see if cutter disk rotates freely.
If disk is stuck, wedge broomstick against side of sink opening until disk comes free, or use allan wrench on bottom of disposal.
If electric power to unit is good, and reset will not reset or reset is not tripped out, and if cutter disk rotates freely, then disposal has gone bad.
You can continue using sink as long as there is no leak that will damage cabinet underneath.

I must have gotten a pit stuck however when I feel in there there's nothing left n there. There's power to it because it hums but it doesn't chop. Any suggestions.

Put a wood broomstick down in the opening, or use allen wrench on bottom of motor, and see if you can free up the cutter disk.
You want the disk to rotate freely.
The use vacuum cleaner hose to make sure all the small stuff is removed.
If the disk rotates freely, but the motor will not start, and the motor just hums, then motor winding has gone bad, and motor is overheating each time it hums. Replace disposal.

Badger 1/2 HP garbage disposal not working. Motor hums, blades are not rotating. I can rotate the service wrench with tension.

I would keep working the impeller back and forth with wrench while running hot water thru disposal until it turns freely. You can see if there are any small bone fragments or other debris in grinding chamber and removing with long needle nose pliers. Good luck. Thank you.

Garbage dispoal not working. The blades spin freely inside, the reset button has been reset, when you switch it on the moter makes a faint humming sound, and the allen wrench will not rotate either way.

You need a new disposal.
Free-rotating blades show there is no obstruction.
Humming says you have power.
Frozen allen wrench says bearings are rusted.
Motor is now overheating each timer electricity is turned on, and motor will overheat and stop humming.
At least the drain is clean and water is not flooding under the sink, which means you can continue using sink until disposal is replaced.

Insinkerator badger 5: plate rotates freely but when switched on it only hums. The blades do nothing.

Hi,

The motor has gone bad

Here is a tip that I wrote that will help you to figure out what is going on with your garbage disposal and why it is not working.

InSinkErator Badger 5, 1/2 HP Garbage Disposal: It hums but doesn't work. The wrench moves freely ...

If the blades move freely with the wrench and stick and motor hums then it sounds like it is time to replace the unit. Have you tried the reset switch? If it is humming than it is probably not tripped but worth a try. Hope this helps.

The motor on my Badger 5 disposal was humming but not rotating. I cleaned out all the debris, reset it and now there's nothing - no hum, nothing. Is my badger dead?

The badger 5 has a dislodge device on the bottom right in the very center. An allen wrench will fit if you have lost the tool that came with it.

FIrts you will need to dislodge anything preventing it from turning. (Insert the right size allen wrench and turn both directions) The remove whatever comes loose after dislodging.

Then opush the red reset button on the bottom. Check the breaker that powers up the disposal, as you may have tripped it.

If the breaker is on, the unit is turning freely, and the reset button is pushed, then the next step is to check for power using a volt meter, to make sure the disposal is indeed getting power. If all the above has been done, the unit IS getting power then yes, the disposal needs to be replaced.

I have a Badger 5 that will not turn on. The blade freely turns by hand, but unit will only hum like the motor is locked. Suggestions.

Use and allen wrench underneath in the center of the disposal. Does the shaft turn freely? If it does, the capacitor is bad. If the shaft won't turn, there is something stuck inside the disposal.
