1985 Yamaha Maxim. starter is going out. How do I go about taking it out????? have to tap it with a hammer to get it to turn., And then it sounds very SICK.
Re: 1985 Yamaha Maxim. starter is going out. How do
First you want to disconnect the positive cable to the starter, than unscrew the 2 bolts holding the starter to the motor, pull them up as far as you can and you will be able to pull the starter out.

Spray starter into the carb intake with no choke, if she runs for a few seconds then you know its fuel starvation clean jets & airways & blow through with compressed air
If
your starter solenoid clicks when you push the starter button, the
starter button is good. Try jumping the power from one solenoid post to
the other. You can use a jumper cable clamp, a screw driver, or touch
the two cables together, this sends power directly to the starter. If
the starter works now , then you have a bad solenoid (burnt internal contact
points). If you hold the starter button and tap on the starter with a
plastic hammer or back of a screw driver and the starter works, then you
need new starter brushes. There are no other parts (other than brushes)
available for the starter from Yamaha. If the bearings are bad or the
armature is shorted you will have to replace the starter as an assembly.
