Hi, Stephan for this scenario you will need your service manual that has all fastener torque specs and a wiring diagram in the back pages, parts fiche, and owners manual if you can not find the best tool you ever bought for your Harley, despair not, for a mere zero $0 you can download another one.

There is a nice writeup buletin on this repair, you need to remove driveshaft and split it in the joint area to be able to replace the center support bearing. I did this twice already on my 99ML320.
You can find all the info with pictures in your local library computer under alldata automotive repair. Or go to mercedes forum sites. Good luck, Bernard

SOURCE: oil is leaking from the

There is a seal right behind the shifter. You can replace this seal without having to pull anything more than the shift lever off the shaft. Loosen and remove the bolt. Mark the case or something so that you can remember where to put the shifter back on and remove the shifter from the shaft. Using a screwdriver slip it between the seal and the shaft and work the seal out of the cover. Try not to scar up the shaft or the case. Once you have it out, slip the new seal over the shaft with it facing in the propter direction and use a deep well socket or something to drive the new seal into the cover. Replace the shifter and put the bolt back in. This should stop your leak.

Good Luck
Steve

My 2005 road king shift shaft on my transmission seems stripped

Could quite well be OR the screw on the shift arm is loose. If you can tighten it with a ling 1.4 inch ball Allen okay but if not you will need to pull the primary cover and the inner primary case to get at the shift shaft and if it is stripped you will need to pull the transmission cassette to get the shifter pawl and shaft assembly out. The weld on the pawl assembly alos breaks and then when the shifter arm turns the shaft the pawl doe not turn. This also requires transmission disassembly to repair.

My 1998 softail custom won't shift above third gear, and i have a really hard time getting it to shift back down

It could be your shifter pawl in the transmission. But, check for any binding in the long linkage between the shifter and transmission. Disconnect the long connector link at the shifter in the front and check for free movement of the connector and the shifter itself. If that moves freely, then I'd suspect the shifter pawl. You'll see the short lever that connects to the shifter pawl shaft. Make sure that it's tight and not loose on the shaft. If it's loose, the splines are probably worn in the lever and on the shaft as well. Move the lever like it would move to shift to a gear. You should feel spring tension against the movement and it should return to "center" when you let go. If not, the shifter pawl return spring is broken. Usually when this happens, all you have is first and second gear.

Good Luck

I have a 20000 electra glide clasic with a stock trannie the spline on the shaft were the linege conects is stripped what part is that ,were can i fine it and what kind of job is it to replace it

I think you're talking about the shifter pawl shaft where the shifter linkage connects. It's called a shifter pawl shaft. You can buy a replacement either OEM or aftermarket. Jim's is probably the best one on the market these days.

To change the shaft is a MAJOR job. You must pull the entire primary drive, including the primary chain, clutch assembly, and the inner primary. The starter must come off. The top of the transmission and shifting mechanism. The exhaust system must come off and the clutch release mechanism off the right side of the transmission. Then, the "trap door" with both the mainshaft and the countershaft of the transmission must come out. Then, you can get the shifter pawl shaft out. Not a job for a beginner unless you are a master mechanic on something else. Even then, I'd advise the purchase of a service manual. There are some special tools involved but they're are various torque wrenches.

Good Luck
Steve
