SOURCE: Needing a wiring diagram for a 1981 HArley

I have one for an '84 model. About the only difference is the 84 model had an alternator instead of a generator. Other than that, it's about the same. contact me at wd4ity@bellsouth.net. I'll try to scan a copy from my service manual and shoot it to you.

SOURCE: transmission oil weight recommended for a 1981

All Harley recommends is their Transmission and Primary Lubricant for Sportsters. Now, what weight it is or any additives for the clutch that may be in it is Harley's secret. Also, the "viscosity" rating for gear lube and engine oils are different and I'm not sure how they relate to each other. I've seen advertisements for a 75W90 lubricant for V-Twin transmissions but I'm not sure if that works for the Sportster since the transmission and the primary (which includes the clutch) are lubricated by the same lubricant.

I would think that you would want a lubricant that would have a "high pressure additive" or "anti-shear" additive in it. When you look on the container, you'll see an API code in a round circle. Most of todays oil only carry one rating for use in gasoline engines. Usually it's as "SH" or "SJ". You need an oil that is rated for use in diesel engines to get the additives that I've just talked about. The rating on the container will read something like "SH/CG4", the CG4 rating being for diesel engine use.

Unless you are in an area where the availability of oils is limited, I'd opt for the H-D oil or one of the oils packaged by someone like "Motor Factory" or "Revco". You may find a recommendation by going to some of the oil companies like Shell, Mobil, or Sunoco.

Good Luck
Steve

SOURCE: What is the size of

The chain size is a #530. Now the number of links varies depending on the size of the sprockets you have on the bike. Mark on of the links with "White Out" correction fluid and count the number of links you in the chain.

SOURCE: Please describe your schematic diagrams

A Harley-Davidson engine is a dry sump type engine. It carries it's oil in a remote tank rather in an oil pan on the engine. It has a pump that pumps the oil from the tank into the engine. There are two paths that the oil takes, one to the tappets to lubricate them and one to the end of the pinion side of the crankshaft, through the gearcase cover. The oil, once it's lubricated the parts, is returned to the gearcase cover by the use of crankcase pressure and the oil pump scavenges the oil out of that cavity. It is pumped to the oil filter and from there back to the tank. The piston skirts and the crankshaft case bearings are lubricated with an oil mist generated by the moving crankshaft. I hope this answers your question.

Good Luck

Set oil pump breather timing 1976 sportser

On the shaft housing of the pump that goes up into the gear case, there is a "window" or little cut out place. With the cams installed and timed, slide the pump into the gear case with the mark on the pump drive shaft aligned in the window. It has been a long time but I'm pretty sure I'm right on this.

How do u set the timing on a oil pump for a 76 harley sportster xlh 1000 lay down pump

On the oil pump shaft housing, just below the gear, there's a small square slot cut out of the housing. If you rotate the oil pump shaft, you'll see a dot on the shaft. You want this dot on the shaft in the slot in the housing when the Top Dead Center mark is in the timing hole on the other side of the engine. You have to install the oil pump like you would a distributor. You turn the dot away from the hole and when you put the pump into position, the oil pump drive gear turns the shaft while the pump goes up on the studs. When you get seated, the marks should be aligned.

Good Luck
