Strong smell of gas on cold startup

Sometimes on the mornings first startup I get a STRONG fresh gas odor. The car is running OK and there is no evidence of a gas leak under the hood. It goes away in about 1-2 minutes.

I have a 2002 Impala, and on cold days on the first start of the day had strong fuel smell. I troubleshot the problem to the fuel pressure regulator on the fuel rail was leaking around the seams. I replaced the regulator and have had no problems since. Hope this helps.

2001 Tundra 4.7 L won't idle when cold. Has new plugs and coils.

The coolant temperature sensor signal to the computer determines fuel injection ratio. When it fails the car will be slow to start and a strong odor of gasoline. turn it off and it will start as normal. A failed sensor will also cause stall at idle speed and poor gas milage. the sensor is located near the top radiator hose connection at the thermostat housing.Use a 19 MM deep well socket.

Mildew odor / smell

You didn't state if you used your A/C often but that is the most likely source. If you use your A/C on maximum it does not allow any fresh air in the vehicle and just recycles the air over and over this allows for bacteria and mold in the system even though you don't see it. run your A/C on min. or medium for a few days this should clear up your problem.

Odor / smell

If it is putrid meat

Look under your car for roadkill , or for that matter under the hood

Has an animal crawled into the muffler area for warmth and has either died there or been killed when you started up

If it is a fishy smell

I dont suppose that you have upset someone and they have tied a piece of fish to the muffler

A very old way of extracting revenge

Strong gas smell and poor gas mileage

If the gas odor is coming from the engine, than the problem is most likely a cracked or poorly seated fuel injector.

Running rough

I would check sparkplugs, plug wires, vacuum hoses to map sensor, check to see if exhaust is strong out pipe, may be a catalytic convertor stopped up , bad O2 sensor will cause starting and idling problems.

Hi,
May I suggest a locking gas cap. You could put a large piece of cardboard under your car and if there are any drops the next morning that smell like gasoline you might find the leak if there is one.
Cheers,
Ken
