The clearance and procedure to adjust is in the manual. If you don't have it go to the Yamaha dealer and ask.

It won't be valve timing or clearance. The fuel/air mix would be the culprit. Clean the carburetor with special attention to the idle circuit. Remount the carb with new manifold gaskets. A manifold air leak will mess up the mixture. Also, get a new spark plug one heat range colder than stock. Hope this helps out!

SOURCE: clearance for inlet and exhaust valve adjustment

Hi there,

Not sure about clearance levels, but can tell you there is no English manual for the XJR 400 - only Japanese. Try the XJR owners club. It's full of troubleshooting questions answered in the forums.

Hope this helped

Bajaj XCD 125 valve clearance please?

Should be the same as Honda 125

What is the valve clearance of a 125? The intake valve clearance should be 0.08mm (0.003 in) and the exhaust valve clearance should be 0.12mm (0.005 in). There should be a slight resistance as you slide the feeler gauge between the adjusting screw and the top of the valve stem. If there is no resistance the clearance is too large.

This actually says on Bajaj CT100 doesn't tell you and suggests 0.007mm.

Valve adjustment

hi, the largest valve clearance is always the exhaust valve due to the higher operating temperatures. So if the clearance is .004 and .006 thousands of an inch, the .004 relates to the intake valve.

Rattle nosie on tappets on engine start up,do tappets or valves need adjustment, and if so what are settings, and the best way to do the job, regards eamo.

Sometimes a dirty oil filter will cause lack of oil to the top end at startup.
As soon as the oil warms, it flows better and faster and hence the noise goes away after warm up.

If you need valves adjusted, the motor must be at TDC on compression stroke(both valves closed)
The motor must be cold do not try to adjust the valve clearance on a warm engine.

On TDC, pull the valve covers and check the clearance on the intake and exhaust valves by inserting a feeler gauge under the tappet.
INTAKE should be : .03-05mm
EXHAUST should be .05-.08 mm

Im sure you don't need a valve adjustment. but if you do: Put Engine on TDC
Loosen the locknut with a 9 or 10 mm wrench, stick the feeler gauge under the tappet, and tighten the little square tipped valve adjuster screw clockwise until you feel friction on the feeler guage.
Enough friction that the feeler gauge feels tight but you can still slide it back and forth.
Not carefully tighten the locknut. Check the feeler guage during tightening to make sure it didn't get too tight or too loose. Once you set the clearance, move to the next valve, and repeat the process using the other feeler guage.
Once both are done put the covers back on and your done,

NOTE: You may have to remove seat, gas tank, airbox, and side covers to get to the covers.
